To prevent pedestrians from stumbling onto a motorway since the path that goes through the valley to Kissing Point Rd is a shared path. My guess.
I believe it is there to prevent animals meandouring onto the motorway.

There is still nothing on the M2 Website, but Bike North has received a communication from Transurban confirming that the M2 is now officially open for Cyclists in both directions.

Yep, I have been using it since returning to work last week. There has just been no official announcement from Transurban as yet, other the mail to Bike North.

First commute back on M2 today! Very nice.

Now when will cyclists get kicked off with the M1-M2 tunnel work? Sigh.

Finally something on M2 website http://www.hillsm2.com.au/58.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Cyclists have been welcomed back onto the motorway following the completion of the Hills M2 northern embankment work near Marsfield.

Cyclists are more vulnerable than motorists in high speed traffic environments such as motorways. If you choose to cycle, we want you to be safe, so here are some tips to help reduce the risks of cycling.

Wear high visibility clothing with reflective fabric

Increase your visibility—travel with lights—both day and night

Cross traffic lanes only at the designated crossing points

Be aware that you are cycling in a high speed traffic environment, so always stay wholly within the breakdown lane

We recommend you ride in single file for a safer journey

Leave your personal audio equipment at home

Always wear a safety approved cycle helmet

Gee that was very well hidden. I took over a couple of mins before I even found the cycle safety bit. Hardly "welcomed back" IMO by an operator that thinks we shouldn't be there but are forced to.

^^^ it's a public road, gosh. Maybe I shouldn't be forced to use their crappy road but for the pathetic planning of our public servants and short sighted development of the road in the first place - the two lanes were NEVER enough to start with!

I love the mention that you should stay completely in the shoulder lane for your own safety. Fair enough and I agree but so often the Police take it up so you have no choice but to enter the motorway, etc, etc. They always cop a warning toot from me. Glad I have an Air Zound

Yes, I agree. And steel rod, invisible at 4:00 am each morning, waiting to strike and coil around your front wheel.

Once, i came across a ute that had broken down. The driver was sitting in his seat with his door half-opened!
I ended up getting off my bike and pushing in pass his vehicle on the inside (almost in the gutter)

Oh, that was during a weekday morning peak hour traffic too

I've gone past a couple break downs and its just not worth the extra couple mins to fly past, i just slow down and pass on the inside

a quick one.. how many here end up going down gorehill vs down pac highway?

I'm a Gore Hill path person but I turn off at Herbert St St Leonards and my office is 400m from the path. No gain by going on the Highway for me.

I make the choice on the day. I ride early so take the hwy most days, but I do the gore hill a couple of times a week as a cruise instead of smashing myself. Going the gore hill I will also split 50/50 between up and over the bridge at Naremburn vs going under Willoughby Rd and via Flat Rock Reserve.

I'm not fast enough for the highway so I will generally use the path and then Herbert St or the back streets through Naremburn. Depends how keen i am the deal with the door zone on Herbert.

Door zone? What door zone? There's a death zone, but I sit in the main traffic lane instead since I'm traffic ;).

Yeah thats what i meant. If i cant be bothered dealing with the traffic on Herbert i'll take the back streets for a more relaxing (but longer and hillier) ride.
