The torque sensing mid drive is very progressive and shuts off once you stop applying load. Th bafang simply goes if you are spinning. The problem being sometimes it means you shift under load when you don't think there is a load.
- Weight. The bafangs weight about 40% more then the torque sensing mid drives. they are built for up to 750w and nerfed at the controller.

I do like the idea of the Bosch torque sensing mid drives and I'd like to test drive one before my next build which I hope to get onto in a couple of months. I'm in Sydney, Australia. Do you know where they can be tested?
The amount of wiring doesn't concern me either way, and the weight difference isn't particularly important to me given the combined weight of my bike, rider and load, (but it is something, I suppose).
But what is important to me is the wear and tear on my expensive gears and the reduction of maintenance or potential damage there, though I'm not sure of the level of risk with my Bafang,
Second most is potential increase of range which would add up to savings on battery replacement: 30% is a big claim though, so I'd like to see evidence of efficiencies before I got too carried away by that.
Meanwhile, I've already put my Yuba and Rohloff and Bafang mid-drive PAS system together (a few weeks back) and I'm quite happy with it's range, speed, and ability to carry my current load up some pretty good little hills. I keep it in geared lower to ensure that the motor is spinning fast and less strained, and I find that is easy to do.
The Rohloff doesn't like to shift under load. Do any gears like to, apart from the Nuvinci 360? But it's not a problem so far. A monetary pedal stop or tap of the brakes cuts the power and apparently the gear sensors do the same, much more efficiently: mine isn't yet attached).

I have one design issue that I wonder if you could answer for me. I'm interested in using this on a bakefits style cargo bike. My bike has the cargo boom welded to the bottom bracket, the bottom of which runs parallel to the ground and attaches at the same level as the bottom of the BB shell. It looks as though the motor requires a little space in front of the BB and above the level of it's lowest point (requiring a sloping down tube) to mount. Is that the case? Or do you imagine I might be able to get it to fit with my bike's configuration. There are some pics in this thread that better illustrate what i'm talking about.

I haven't done my very own install yet (mine is still in the mail). I went torque sensing mainly for the slightly better power usage (requires your own input, but mostly because there is no brake cutoff since I'm running hydraulics. Strangely one of my mates has the tongshen on a bakefits! I haven't taken a look at his bike closely but I do recall there were some issues with the BB area since it's a bit atypical. The motor is rotated back a little and that has issues with some of the mounting hardware (had to grind a bit off) and a little play in the motor. I haven't seen the bike since the first install but he has mentioned he's done some stuff to stiffen it up and prevent movement. I can ask and see what he says, maybe pics too.
Having said that though. It looks like the standards 250W torque sensing is not quite enough for the bakefits. Mate rekons a throttle is a much better option, especially to get the heavy bike+ load moving.

I don't know about the Tongsheng but yeah, I don't think the Bafang will do it for you if you've got the boom bellow the BB. I've been putting my Rohloff through it's paces for quite a few months now with me (100kg), my Yuba (30 something kg), and a regular 80, sometimes 100 kg and more, with an electric motor just to increase the stress on the wheel, and it's been great.
Inching, well loaded, up and down the insane hills of Coogee. Carrying 4 x 45 litre boxes of tools and materials, plus steel mini scaffold and so on. Lately I noticed that I had been neglectful too. The Yuba frame is fine, the Rohloff hub is fine, but I really didn't keep an eye on my spokes, so I broke a couple recently, and had to stick a couple back in and true the wheel properly, axial truing and radial too.
At the same time, after doing a little research, I decided that with all the work my wheel does, I should get an ideal wheel with Ryde Andra30 rim, Rohloff double butted spokes, Flange Support etc. I had already ordered that Andra rim, when I revisited this post and reread the post from Rohloff Australia's Paul Moir in which he wrote that for Rohloff Speedhubs 1-cross lacing is better than 2-cross lacing. (Excerpt below, and full post above at Wed May 03, 2017 6:27 pm).
I love to play, but I'm not playing around here. I'm riding a heavily loaded bike in traffic and so I want the best wheel. So now I'm having my first Rohloff frustration. I've asked for technical quantification of what sort of extra stability and strength I could expect, suggestions for best rims for this sort of build (because a 1-cross would want a different rim to the Andra30 - with it's slanted spoke holes) and so on. And I' getting nothing from a number of emails and Facebook posts at Rohloff AG (Germany) and Rohloff Australia, or from the two Rohloff Wheelbuilders I've emailed (though one did give a vague, 'yeah but it's minimal' sort of answer.
Does anyone here know anything about how 1-cross Rohloff Speedhub lacings, and how they compare to the usual 2-cross?

"WHEEL LACING PATTERNS
As explained, the more often a spoke crosses, the force from the rim will be directed into the flange further outward thus having less direct influence on flange stability. The greater angle created however will cause the spoke to enter the rim at a more obtuse angle. Rims are drilled to permit a certain amount of nipple movement so that the route from spoke to nipple remains as straight as possible. If the spoke entry angle is too obtuse, spokes will kink at the nipple join and this kink will lead to premature spoke failure. The situation is made worse when using hubs with a large spoke P.C.D. such as the Rohloff Speedhub and worse still when using modern rims with eyelets - where eyelets are reduced in diameter below 4.4mm (to save vital steel weight) so that the nipple has even less space to angle itself in the direction of the spoke. The ideal spoke lacing pattern for the Rohloff Speedhub wheel is actually 1-cross, although our customers would not accept this when the Speedhub was first introduced. Hence our recommendation remains a 2-cross lacing pattern for wheels of 26 inch diameter and larger (see image link below showing the spoke entry angle for a 1-cross Speedhub wheel laid over that for a typical 3-cross derailleur wheel).

Hows your Rohloff / Bafang holding up long term? Did you go 1 cross or 2 cross with your wheel?
What sort of distance are you getting out of a battery when fully loaded?
I have a Surly Big Fat Dummy and having just done a tour of 1300 K's, which included the Albany to Collie leg of the Munda Biddi, I'm considering whether I should add a pedal assist to it. I'm already a die-hard Rohloff fan, so that parts a no brainer should I keep the rig.

The Rohloff is still great. I went with the standard 2 cross in the end.
The Bafang has just become a problem. I left it out in the weather without a battery in position and now the electrics are dropping out. Big life stuff, exhaustion, then a dumb move or two.
Up till now it's been great. It's just a 36v 250w and I've been working it hard since buying it, riding most days, doing the big household grocery shop (with a full trolley load) and carrying 40 60, 80, 120kg of tools from Rosebery to Leichhardt a few days a week. I have a 19Ah or 21Ah. I cane it there and back with a massive load and it uses about 2/3 of a battery.
I hope I can find a good tech. The guy I'd have gone to seems to have dropped out of the business.

I found the Rohloff, already built into a good solid rim, for sale as part of a bike set up and just transferred it all across. I needed some adaptors to fit the axle into the frame which is built for a somewhat larger axle.
Recently I took it into Omafiets (George St Redfern) to have it rebuilt with flange supports and new spokes. The rebuild labour was $75 including a retensioning a few weeks later.
The key thing, apparently, is to have the correct Rohloff angled (and width) spokes because of the unusual spoke thread pattern.
I haven't got to putting on the disc brakes yet, because I've been thinking about another build option.

I think Yuba or cargocycles sell the 14mm to 12mm axle adapters. I bought a nuvinci n171 from omafiets, the heaviest most draining shift you can imagine, when the rubber wore off the shifter I locked on a pair of vise grips to move the damn thing.

The only problems I've experienced have been
- The Rohloff I bought is an early (32 hole) speedhub, that was built into a Rim quite a while ago and I don't think the spokes were all that crash hot. As I mentioned a few posts ago, I got Omafiets to respoke it (with Double Butted Sapim Race 2/1.8/2 Spokes (with 2.9mm Neck)) and I've had no spoke problems since.
- The Yuba Mundo V3 has 14mm axle and dropouts and my Rohloff axle is smaller so I used some "top hat" BMX washers to make it fit. Though it fits, I sometimes have a problem at start up when the torque causes the axle to pull forward and out. It's a bore but I've just contacted Omafiets again about a Yuba anti-rotation axle adaptor which I hope will finally sort that. <https://yubabikes.com.au/cargobikestore ... ear-motors
Otherwise, no complaints. I'd like to finally get around to installing the disc brakes I bought over a year ago, and the Ryde Andra 40 Rims I had delivered to make it that much stronger. If I had a lazy $6K I'd probably just buy a Yuba Spicy Curry and transfer the Rohloff to that but not this week.

How's your build going. Shame about the nuvinci shift problem. If you can get a Rohloff, I couldn't recommend it more highly. Otherwise, maybe the Nexus or Alfine. I picked up an Alfine set for around $500 on eBay and my eBay Rohloff search is always coming up with 32 hole choices - though you want to research to make sure you get the variation you want (axle or skewer, int or ext mech, etc). High bent trikes aren't common. The Greenspeed Anura is fairly high but being a delta - 2 wheels at the back - it handles differently to a tadpole (2 wheels at the front) and isn't as good around corners at speed. Trisled do a delta trike too, the sidestep. It is also a farly high seat. Trisled do specialist cargo bikes/trikes, a chat to them might give you some ideas.
Most trike riders like speed... and the lower the seat the better the handling. Too high and you get what ATV riders found and why you can't buy 3 wheeled ATVs anymore: rollover is too damned easy. Greenspeed's Magnum has a variable seat height but even at the top height you won't be at bicycle rider head level.
The thing about 'bents is not so much more power but more comfort and better aerodynamics at speed if you have a low seat angle. No aerodynamic advantage with an upright seat. Don't knock the comfort level, having your weight on your well-supported bum and your back with your head at a comfortable angle and your arms relaxed by your side is quite noticeable by the 2nd hour never mind the 4th. (And a low slung trike is a fair bit of fun at speed!)
There's a guy posts on bentriderlonline.com called Nick Mclaren who runs a Rohloff and a Schlumpf on a trike. He finds it suits him well but do note he's partly disabled so doesn't put out a lot of power when he pedals. A masher might not do as well. I disliked the Schlumpf because I am a bit of a masher and I didn't like the spongy feeling when I was going up hills.
