In somewhat related news (ie light sentencing), WA pedestrian killed by a phone-distracted driver, and driver only gets 7 months in jail:
The court heard Milne had reached over to touch his mobile phone before hitting Mr Ballantyne, who was walking alongside Ennis Avenue at night.

The driver had crossed the solid white line and was doing about 95 kilometres per hour.

As well as being sentenced to seven months in jail, Milne was fined $400 and disqualified from driving for six months.

This guy actually seems to have shown genuine remorse, but that doesn't bring the dead back to life. What hope do any of our families have for anything resembling justice for the modern day equivalent of drink driving?

....think will start a new thread quoting this article as doesn't relate to cycling deaths but does this actually have any legal meaning in WA or is a made up "rule" "Mr Ballantyne was not walking in an authorised pedestrian zone but was on a "well-trodden" path, the court was told."

new thread here https://www.bicycles.net.au/forums/view ... 3&t=102840

TheAge is reporting a cyclist killed today in Melbourne

"A cyclist has died following a collision with a truck in Travancore this morning.

It is believed the driver of a truck travelling south-east along Mount Alexander Road turned left into Mooltan Street and struck a cyclist just before 6am."

Two cyclists in one day on Melbourne's roads.
Both attributed to trucks in separate incidents.

...and see above post.
To make matters worse a 14 year old boy died in hospital yesterday after being knocked from his bike on March 11 in Frankston.
Take care and condolences to the families.

Another woman killed by a truck :(

It would be interesting to see if females are over-represented in fatal metropolitan truck collisions. It would seem to be the case. Perhaps they are less likely to claim the lane?

I saw some posts and pictures on FB about this incident. Really tragic.
Apparently there is a bike lane adjacent to the main traffic lanes. The girl was riding her bike in the bike lane and travelling straight.
There is a left turn ahead. She's going straight and a vehicle (truck I believe) had belatedly decided to turn left, cut across the bike lane and took her out. Clearly speculation on my part. But judging from the police equipment and the left-turn in the photo, that seemed to be the case. A notorious black spot according to some local cyclists.

That is true.

I ride this section of road everyday. There is an on road bicycle lane and motor vehicles are split in 2 with about half heading down Queens Road and half down StKilda Road. Motor vehicles are encouraged to turn early, prior to Fitzroy Street, but many leave it to the last minute and cut across the bike lane, as that would involve waiting behind other vehicles.

Even at the earlier section where vehicles cross the bike lane, they are obliged to give way but everyday it is up to the cyclist to dodge the cars.

From NSW Police Facebook.

A cyclist has died after being hit by a truck in Leichhardt.

About 1pm today (Thursday 2 April 2020), police were called to Parramatta Road, Leichhardt after a report of a collision between a pushbike and large truck.

NSW Ambulance attended, but the man was unable to be saved and died at the scene.

Officers attached to Inner West Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene.

The Crash Investigation Unit (CIU) will be attending to investigate the incident.

The driver of the truck was not injured and has been taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

Motorist are advised traffic is heavy with diversions in place, and should avoid the area where possible

Stopped on Parramatta Road? That’s crazy. I used to commute on that road, the entire length of it. Stopping anywhere along it is a death wish.

I don’t miss that commute.

So lucky that the truck driver isn’t injured, I mean, it’s so hazardous for a big truck to hit a little bicycle.

Apologies, I’m a bit more snappy and cynical than usual.

Absolutely terrible, condolences to those who knew him.

But how do they know why he stopped? (I notice it is not in the police report, so maybe just a reporter's speculation?)

Putting 2 and 2 together, delivery rider missed an address, stopped with their head down looking at their phone, oblivious to surrounding environment. Seen them do it on the Anzac Bridge twice now, confused as to why the map is telling them to turn right probably thinking they are on the road below the bridge.

Tragic and avoidable on a few fronts.

Some extra details...

https://www.theage.com.au/national/vict ... 54w0o.html

For those blocked by paywall...

A man has been arrested over the alleged hit-run death of a 60-year-old cyclist, who was struck and killed in Melbourne's bayside on Sunday afternoon. The Mentone woman was cycling along Beach Road in Beaumaris and was hit by a Holden Commodore about 5.25pm, police say. The driver didn't stop at the scene to help, police allege, and the woman died at the scene. Police soon found a car they say was involved, in Waller Court in the nearby suburb of Cheltenham.

Two women who were passengers in the car were assisting police with their inquiries, while officers tried to find the driver. A 35-year-old man from Armstrong Creek, in Geelong, was later arrested and has been assisting police. Beach Road has a renowned cycling-stretch down 17 kilometres of the bayside foreshore, with dedicated cycling lanes. Nine News reported the woman was wearing reflective gear, had lights on, and was cycling in the bike lane. On Sunday, police said there had been 92 deaths on Victorian roads so far this year compared to 124 at the same time in 2019.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or may have dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or make an anonymous report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
