Anyone got any idea what the upcoming "safety product launch" from Cycliq is going to be?

Maybe Fly6 integrating a rear radar like Garmin sell?

no idea. these days, their marketing seems to be full of sales hype more than anything.
i hope it's not a bundled package promo

Their "launch" was a website: https://upride.cc/

I spoke with Cycliq and will provide a fast overview of their new 'initiative' Upride.

This is a 'powered by' platform that hosts videos made by bike riders - from any video camera. So the camera doesn't need to be a cycliq product but on the launch, most videos are from cycliq.

It is map-based so the short videos are marked (e.g. close-pass, collision, etc) and pinned to the location on the map.

There are two roles - firstly it shows hot-spots. Although this will also rely on who uploads to UpRide is likely to be initially skewed. This is of interest for riders by also authorities to identify danger areas which can be solved by improved infrastructure.

The second role is as evidence where video can be uploaded and the link shared with police. Basic details are included (e.g. time / date) so it acts as a fairly accessible platform.

HOWEVER - if you are involved in a close pass or collision - it is crucial that this is reported and that you are able to provide the Police with the original and unedited video footage.

This means the best case is that:
1. you make a copy of the footage - so that you have a duplicate.
2. you bring a device such as a laptop, table or mobile where you can show the police when reporting
3. you bring the original SD card and make it available

The idea is that you are offering the original medie / files that are unedited / untampered with as I have even been (incorrectly) informed by a police officer that my footage can't be submitted because it is not official police footage and may have been tampered with and can't be used as evidence. This is wrong... but in reporting an incident, if you make the original available then this reduces speculation / uncertainties.

In Australia, your own bike video footage is valid evidence however it is not always easy for police to judge distances because the video is skewed and may not have reference points. For this reason, 'calibration' makes sense and in essence is a reference for determining distances.

My current problems with the Fly6CE and Fly12CE cameras

Both appear to shut-off randomly while riding. The charge is fine so I can start them and they will resume (as if nothing happened) but I don't yet understand why they are shutting off with no obvious pauses in riding or no obvious 'crash detection' initiated.

I formatted the SD-Cards and also did master-resets and also complete firmware updates. The Fly6CE is tricky it simply is not being recognised by the computer (USB) but directly over the SD card I was able to complete the updates. Following this, the Fly12CE still stopped during the next ride for no obvious reason.

Also, I can't connect to either device through the (latest) smartphone app. I updated the app and have followed instructions but neither cameras are recognised. I think this will be a Cycliq tech problem that I will track and update on for the benefit of others also experiencing similar issues.

Update already. On the phone... delete all old Cycliq related apps completed and load the latest one (rather than update) and now I can connect... but not do anything with video content yet.

WARNING : The iOS Cycliq app by default has a setting that is checked to 'share anonymized location and usage data with Mapbox'. This is checked by default whereas users should specifically be asked before sharing data with a 3rd party.

For the deskstop app, it now connects... don't know why the cameras are both identified now. It crashes or stalls when trying to connect with strava.

I thought they dropped the functionality of using the app to play with video

Another Update and WOW

But this is a sarcastic and disappointed wow... on smartphones you need hardware accessory to read the micro-sd cards... i.e. for iPhone you need to buy an extra accessory to be able to view footage on your phone.

Now the connectivity and reliability of the old Cycliq apps was horrendous. But either you go and purchase an extra device (or by chance have a smartphone with a micro-sd card slot / reader)... or the Cycliq smart-phone app is purely for adjusting camera settings.

Essentially this was always a big plus for Cycliq ... and while it was always a pain and users were hopeful for a bit of reliability, it should be fair to say that this option has effectively been removed for most. In this respect, it appears to be useless to have a Strava connection (for overlaying ride data).

With this answered, the two answered questions are:
- Getting the Desktop app to work and making videos with overlays (without the app crashing)
- Understanding why the devices stop recording (even though they have enough power) and have problems properly recording ride data (i.e. light flashes, recording light is on, but no video is captured as expected).

Really disappointed with the stock Fly 12 mount, broken after only 4 rides. This is the most fragile mount for anything I have ever put on a bike. I tightened it up on the handlebar, using only the short end of the supplied allen key to minimize the torque. Ir seemed OK but on the 4th ride, the camera kept slipping , rotating downwards and was very loose. On inspection, I found the hinge joint had split. Attach an expensive camera with a 10c part..... Not smart Cycliq! Oh well I have an out front mount on order anyway.

The Fly6CE mount is fine (in my view) though you need to choose the correct insert to suit the seatpost and angle. The velcro with the rubberised backing degrades steadily.... but is still providing enough grip.

For the Fly12 / Fly12CE, I have only every used aluminium mounts from K-Edge. I purchased a bunch a while back and they are super-expensive, but on the flip-side, have been useful for many many years. The big issue with mounting devices on the front is keeping them away from the bars... i.e. they should be out the front and underneath the handlebar height.

Handlebar mounts that put a camera or device directly on top or underneath the handlebars steal space. But the advantage of a small mount is that it is less prone to vibrating and fracturing. So a mount that extends and holds the Fly12CE camera which had a bit of weight needs to resist this vibration... hence the aluminium. For damping and to protect the bars from (more) scratches, I cut a small piece of inner-tube and find that this does a fairly good job of reducing shutter-role (jello effect).

Ta, I am going to try the alloy combo stem mounted extension I ordered. I don't recall the brand but have seen them about the same price as the K-Edge. It's significantly marked down, though that may mean it's a knock off. Currently I can't mount anything directly under the bars due to cable routing. So I'm trying out front and with mounting on the lower bolts gets the my Garmin Edge lowish. Looking at the dimensions, I think the Fly 12 will be about 1 cm off the cables, there are 2 was the GoPro mount can attach which can adjust the cameras overhang / clearance but also affects it's balance relative to the mount. Preferably I want the GoPro pivoting bolt in the forward position which will bring the cameras CG as far rearward as possible, balancing the camera correctly and minimizing moment forces on the mount. I think it work out that way. My only concern is just how secure the stem mount is. See how that goes, I can always fork out for a K-Edge if it's not up to scratch.

Discovered another odd thing with the Fly 12 videos today. They won't play on my Samsung smart TV.
I can play the unedited files from the Fly 6 Gen2 on the TV, but the unedited Fly 12 files raise an error.
All the files I have edited play fine, just not the unedited ones. Everything plays fine on my laptop.

The only difference I can see between the Fly 12 and Fly 6 files is the naming.
Fly 6 is like IMG_0001.MP4
Fly 12 is like CYQ_0001.MP4

So I tried renaming CYQ to IMG to no avail.

I thought, maybe an unprintable char in the name.
Tried typing in a completely different name
Tried opening in software and save as.
Neither of these worked.

It appears there has to be some sort of edit operation on the Fly 12 files before they will play on a Samsung (not so) smart TV

Anyone had this issue?

Ta, but can you explain further? I mean, the files are .MP4 and the Samsung smart TV plays .MP4 format files.
It plays MP4 files created by my fly6 gen2 & other cameras but won't play MP4 files created by my Fly 12 CE.
I don't understand what it is about these fly 12 files that needs to be converted to what, so I won't know what conversion to run.
Can you explain further?

MP4 is a container. in MP4 you can have different types of video and audio and would still be called mp4. just because it's MP4 doesn't mean it will always have the same video and audio streams

I suggest using a tether with a new mount to be sure.

A while back the virtues of cheap knock-offs were discussed and they are a mixed bag... so there can be failures and probably comes down to the quality of the original steel.

For cycliq I have a support ticket and they want a range of videos... so will need time to do this to show them.

Bear in mind that the Garmin/fly12ce combo from kedge isn’t compatible with the Cycliq cameras due to their weight. The 2 bolts underneath come loose and the camera and Garmin can be ejected out of your reach.

Hi, I have a question Re. CycliqPlus on windows10. When I go to Add Tramline > Camera Model, I only get options to select varients of Fly 12.

How to set a Fly6 Gen2 calibration offsets?

Also, I noticed that after setting the centre offsets for fly12 CE, the tramlines are not even on both sides of the frame. Surely, if the camera lens in on the bikes centreline, the tramlines should be symmetrical about the vertical centre line of the frame. Why aren't they?
In fact the tramlines are not equal centred in the frame until the centre offset is +10 which seams completely wrong and not consistent with how perspective works.

I have a report back from Cycliq that the Strava crashing / connection issue is now a known issue that needs to be fixed.

--
On tramlines - the first thing is are you able to successfully connect your Fly6 camera? I use mac but had the issue that I can't connect it with a cable so that it is identified. It is a problem I am trying to solve so as a backup can load the SD card and this is recognised.

Regarding the tramline sizing - I recall a while back there was an offset option consider that cameras may not always be set in the middle... if I find this in the software I will let you know.

Ta, Yes I connect either the Fly12 or Fly6 to CycliqPlus and import video files from either camera, export to a folder etc. The tramline dropdown doesn't list Fly6 though, only lists 3 versions of fly 12. All I can do is select Fly 12 and change the offsets appropriatly for that camera but I suspect its not right as they seem scaled differently between the 2 cameras for the same passing car.

I have electronic stabilisation on for the Fly 12 and off for the Fly 6 which could account for the scaling differences as could camera design. I am not sure if camera model selection is important, the fact that the option exists suggest it might well be.

Bit of both. Bolts aren't torqued really high (as they are a small screw with a design purpose in mind) and the mount isn't designed for the weight of both the garmin and heavy cycliq cameras. On rough roads the vibration combined with the extra weight is enough that it slowly breaks down the glue/loctite/whatever they use and the screws slowly make their way loose. As soon as there is movement in the screw they just easily vibrate out of the mount.

Previous generations are unaffected due to the 1 piece design. Newer gen are a 2 piece unit - this is for manufacturing reasons for a faster output IIRC.

Personal experience. 2 mounts with different cameras still good. 3 mounts with cycliq attachments have come off. God knows how many others I have seen come off.

Hi,

I am pretty sure drivers are unaware that I am cycling with cameras. However, I came across a conversation on GCN today that a study found that clothing indicating you are cycling with a camera, statistically changes driver behavior for the better. Link below, conversation begins about 3:21 into into the video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPqymDuKc-Q

Maybe we need this printed on jerseys, gilets etc.
