If it's a fixie/track bike, the rear spacing may be less than what an igh requires
Good point, forgot about that.

The Nexus7 is narrower at 130mm, and the 3sp is narrower again (126mm ?) so that may be the only option.

Or go modern Sturmey-Archer, there is a 120mm OLD verison of the 8sp hub (no coaster brake, no nothin', just gears) but then we're stuck with either a trigger shifter or a thumb shifter. No integrated levers.

edit : spelling

Some models of hubs are available in a variety of axle widths to suit different frames.

Regardless of spacing, the dropout arrangement (technically they're not dropouts, rather fork tips or track ends) precludes the fitting of derailleur gears, so an internal-geared hub (IGH) as mentioned above will be the way to get gears.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Does anyone know what sort of conversion i could do with this fixie track bike to make it a viable road bike?

It can be made to work as with 6 speed derailleur gears with the right parts, knowledge and tools. You would need an old Suntour freewheel, a fork end mounted derailleur hanger a 7 or 8 spd brifter, and a full length cable housing and cable ties. You may also need a longer BB axle or a road crank if you have chainline issues.

I did it with my son's track bike here so that he could use it to race both road and track on it. I was able to do the conversion in about 20min. That bike had a road crank, and when I re-spaced the flip flop hub to fit the freewheel, it pushed the fixed cog further out. That meant that the fixed cog lined up better with the ring in the outside position, which worked out pretty well.

Cheers,

Cameron

Viable for what?

I have used my single speed for commuting 40km to work, century solo rides (ie 100km+ rides), fast 50km bunch rides, hell I have even raced it in time trials, criteriums and road races. OK 52x16 is not the best sprinting gear and any climbs over 200m and 6% are a PITA. But otherwise it just works.

Check the rear wheel, one side should be fixed the other side a freewheel. If not replace the fixed cog on the freewheel side with a freewheel ($25) an 18 tooth is a good place to start, and ride it.

If you need gears then look for a bike designed to use gears. Trying to retrofit a bike to use gears when it is not designed to, is going to challenging, costly and unlikely to be as efficient as a regular geared bike.

Thanks.
Yeah, by viable I meant a dropbar sti or alfine setup with two brakes . Cameron has a nice conversion, but it looks like whichever way is going to be too much hassle and/or money, and depends on the spacing. Geez those alfines are exe! And the SB-N110 too, which look a nice piece of kit.

Yeah, it's an expensive deal with new parts. I've done the job a couple of times, but always to a flat bar set up, and always using salvaged parts. I've used a couple of different Nexus hubs and an Alfine, but haven't yet used any of the new SunRace Sturmey-Archer hubs. If you found a cheap used hybrid bike with a Shimano Nexus/Alfine hub, that would be a good starting point for the wheels, crank etc, leaving you only the shifter to buy.

Is how I get my hands on these things. Too expensive otherwise.

There was a Pegoretti Luigino that popped up in eBay late yesterday with a Buy It Now for 4 grand. Don't see many of them around. By the time I logged into eBay 2 hours later, it was sold. phew. :D

I've seen the Peg in the metal, it's literally 2 doors down from my office 8) It is a very, very nice frame, currently wearing some nice parts that will probably be next to go. The wheels are *chefs kiss* but being 36H will probably turn people off unnecessarily.

That stem 'arrangement' doesn't belong, looks like owner was messing with fit in an uninformed fashion (I hate adjustable stems btw). Pic 7 of his ad shows all of the OE and other stems they've been messing with. Not sure I'd give $2700 for it, but set up properly that would be a seriously quick little track bike.

This :

is what it should look like, i.e. a proper stem, although some of the earlier units had a funky stem arrangement >>

Felt had (possibly still have) a bit of a thing for weird proprietary stem arrangements. That looks genuine in all its awfulness.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

This is true, but not two adjustables on one bike, surely ?!

Yep, the stems overlap in a similar manner to inner & outer chain links - it's not a bodge, despite the appearance! More typically the arrangement is set in a Z-shape of varying angles, but the above setup is very possible. Look did a similar, but not quite so ungainly setup on some of their track/TT frames.

(snip)
Yeah, I got that (the inner/outer) had just never seen it before and can't understand why it's even a thing.

Oh well, today I learned. Duck is that set up particularly prone to flex ? (Assuming you've seen one in the flesh). Looks like something you'd find on an Amazon no-name bike.

Been a while since I worked on one... The various parts are reasonably stiff, but can be a bit prone to flex in a fully-extended position such as the one in question. Not so bad in the more retracted settings where the components brace each other.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

It might have been one of those bikes you have to half assemble yourself ?

And the other thing i thought... brave design decision to make a foldable dual suspension bike. ... Snap. :x

A rare unused Peg, presumably built by the late Dario himself.
Aussie seller.
Costs a few coins though. But could be a financial investment :D
