Help needed for route from Sandgate to Woolloongabba
Postby soc » Wed Dec 17, 2008 2:17 pm
I currently ride from Sandgate to Albion as my commute to work. We've just been told that our office will be relocating to Woolloongabba soon (yay
). Has anybody got suggestions on the best way to get from Albion (the TAB building) to Woolloongabba (the Golden Casket building)? I currently do Sandgate Rd down to Toombul shopping centre and cut through Kalinga park through to Hudson rd, thereby avoiding roads without a cycle lane. Any ideas how I can get through the city safely and then what's the best route down to the Gabba?

this is just one idea:
just before you would turn onto hudson road, stay on bridge st down the hill into Mawarra, then right into Albion Rd, left almost straight away into McDonald Rd - follow that til the end and turn right into somerset, left into Albany, right into le geht. Cross train tracks and continue on le geht.
cross bowen bridge road (le geht becomes Prospect) and then turn left into cox and cross newmarket road into green tce.
Turn right from green tce into downey park when green tce hits northey street.
Follow green tce past the netball courts, the offleach area and cross the footbridge over breakfast crk. Then turn right into butterfield and then first left into bramston tce (big hill - but you can take a longer route to get around it)
at herston rd cross at lights beside hospital and mount footpath for 20 metres to connect with bike path that swings around past victoria park golf course.
Follow bike path for a bit til you see a bridge on left, follow up hill and turn right over land bridge. turn right at other end of land bridge (don't go up the hill). Follow bike path behind grammar schools and then go through tunnel under normanby 5 ways. turn onto roma street parklands road and follow this road down under train tracks until you get to roma street. Turn right and then left into herschel. At end of herschel turn right and try to stay in right lane. (You should be able to do this cause not many cars turn left there and the lights will stop the traffic on north quay before they can catch you.) Then turn right onto the bicentenniel bike path (look for blue and white road paint to indicate where to leave road)
Follow bike path all the way to and over goodwill bridge and then you are practically in woolloongabba. phew.

Stay on the path and turn left immediately before the Crushers Leagues Club. Follow this to Lanham Ave. Go down Days and Kedron Brook Rd, crossing Newmarket Rd in to Noble St. At the end of Noble Street is the bridge over Breakfast Creek. Follow winona_rider's route from there.
Once you have done it, it's not that hard.
You can take this path all the way from Sandgate. It's obviously not as quick as Sandgate Rd though and you probably knew that already.

Make a print out from google maps or a refedex photocopy and use a small bull dog clip to fix it to a cable near your bars. This is common on Audax rides. I also note that winona-rider's reply may have been motivated by the fact that you are probably on a road bike. The section of path I advised you to remain on is truly the home of kadoonks and can be a little rough. A trade off with traffic, perhaps.
Try both. Good luck.

The shortest route from Albion to Woolloongabba would be Bridge str - Mawarra str - Albion rd (for a few metres) - McDonald rd until the end - Somerset str - Albany str - then you'll see a bike path which will take you to Federation str from where you turn left into Lutwyche Rd (I usually feel comfortable staying on the road until Bowen Bridge and then switch to the footpath). Then you just continue straight until Story Bridge.
After the Story Bridge the route depends on where your office is.

Haven't had the chance to give these routes a trial run yet. The Storey Bridge route sounds quicker (but Lutwyche rd/Bowen Bridge rd might be a bit hairy) and it looks like I could go under the bridge then around to a bike path along the cliffs and join up to the path alongside the Motorway? I've got to get to the Golden Casket building, near the Norman Hotel.
I'll probably end up using different routes depending on the time of day and the mood I'm in at the time, so having options is great. Any more suggestions are welcome.
