New Fly6 CE and Fly12 CE Camera's

There are some excellent demonstrations of the Varia in action by GPLama and DCrainmaker on YT. After watching them I think it would be worthwhile. Unfortunately I don't have a head unit new enough to support it which has to be dealt with first.

I'll check it out. I just bought a Garmin 530 Head Unit last week because my 520 has been playing up, so I needed a new device before I send the 520 back for a refurbished replacement.

For the love of God, how do you mount the Fly 12CE to your handlebars? I was bought the camera in July as a fantastic birthday present (I'd had my eye in it for a while) but the mount it cones with is too small for my road bike. There's an adaptor to use with other mounts so I've tried the k-edge 3.1mm go big go pro mount (https://www.this link is broken/k-edge-go-big- ... nt=product) but the pivot where the fins interlock is too loose so the camera flops forward and back with the slightest vibration.

Cycliq say the k-edge mount should be fine but it's not. Cycliq don't seem to be able to suggest a mount that is compatible. So over 2 months and I still can't use it (and missed out reporting lots of aggressive, dangerous and illegal driving ).

I don't understand why it doesn't come with a mount that fits all standard handlebar sizes?

Don’t use the cycliq screw/bolt

Use one where you need an Allen key. There is usually clamping force to keep it tight.

However a scenario also is an issue with tolerances in the manufacture. Usually when you place the camera in position, it is a close fit without too much play.

Amanda - I had the same issue with my original fly 12. I used a piece of laminate plastic to stop the rotation

I use the k-edge mounts on all my bikes for my fly12 and garmin. You can get different sizes - they fit road and MTB bars. Check you have either 31.8 or 35. Only thing to remember is to take the bolts out and put some threadlock on them and you're good to go.

What do you mean?
They would either do an inmoulded button or something underneath to give the click-feel. That said, the current gen fly CE bike cameras don’t have great buttons as the tactile feedback is poor and I need the audible confirmation to be sure.

However I don’t know about the lastest smaller fly6 and if the buttons are the same. Cycliq contacted me a while ago to organise the review... i followed up a few times but nothing... I am interested in a close look and doing detailed comparisions / review but not sure what to make of them at the moment.

There's nothing there to click behind the rubber. The button on the opposite side Clicks

Well the ‘click’ should be there on both sides and if this moulded or extra bit under the button was always missing, it could still work but the gap would make it more susceptible to this type of failure. Will be interesting to see the support feedback.

I've had great luck gluing a old piece of inner tube over the hole, and then putting something in there to reach the button. I've done it on a few garmins and an old fly 6.

It had a button till Tuesday. Now it's gone. No click. Cycliq offered me 10% off a new one

My son's driving instructor had a camera on the back of the car, on the L plate pole, the other day.
He is a cyclist too.
I asked it what camera it was.
"It is a fly6. The last one, of the 4 I have, that still works."
Not making me too enthused toward getting one.

I have one of the early fly6ce's. The camera isn't that great.. and the speaker died when I accidentally flung it across the garage trying to attach it to the seatpost. None the less.. it is still chugging along. I did a battery test on it yesterday and it recorded from 10am till 4pm and the light continued to run till 5 when I got bored of the blinking. Yet I've recommended them to friends and they've had trouble. I guess that's was QA is about.. the % of good ones.

Anyway if you don't need it now I think the longer you can put things off is always better. I love the idea of supporting an Aussie company but they need to get the quality and support right or they give a competitor a head start. I can't understand why we haven't seen one... you wouldn't think combining a blinky light and a camera in a compact package was that hard?

We are getting safe passing rules here next year.
I may get one then.
I understand that police in other states haven't been too enthused about pursuing complaints.
We have had a few deaths here. I am an ambo so can tell police I am well aware of potential results. I may get a more positive response.
There are a handful of passes I have had over the last few years that have infuriated me. I'd have reported them with footage and minimum passing distance laws in place.

I really do hope it goes well for you all and improves safety. As I've said before.. the best reason to run one in QLD is not to report close passes.. but if you are ever hit then it increases your chances of having a better CTP outcome. Again.. that might vary by state.

It means there are limited options but overall this type of product is useful.

IMHO going into the whole connected space was possibly a wrong turn. Adding BT, and then having to develop and supoort apps to administer them had added so much stuff that needs supporting.

I think all they needed to do was take the original simple designs and make them more durable and rugged. It's not like they have any competitors.

A replaceable battery is essential. I've had one Fly 6 die after two years with 200 recharges. My current CE doesn't get anywhere near six hours. The Cycliq excuse about waterproofing with a replaceable battery is hogwash. I have several products which use replaceable batteries and they are waterproof. My guess for the lack of competitors is Cycliq patenting most of the technology.

I updated the firmware on my fly6CE on cycliq's recommendation. Thought it was just a tick the boxes exercise but it actually made a really big difference. I'm now back to 6 hours!

That's good to hear on the update.

On replaceable batteries - I understand this though with our consumerism I feel a lot of people focus on shorter cycles of 1 - 2 years so a tech company would fairly ask whether they go into the extra work of making a replaceable battery when the product is just getting superseded and out-of-warranty products that are no longer performing are just defined as obsolete. It is unfortunately more expensive to build for sustainability and longevity... plus many companies build in the natural expiration to help trigger future sales... and it will be difficult for many businesses to move beyond this.

Just had the same with my gen 2 fly6 (2017 I think?), both buttons (rubber) have perished and broken. It still works fine (tape over the buttons to keep them in place) but I won't be using it out in the rain anytime soon.
