What GPS for touring navigation
Postby gregmacc » Mon Apr 19, 2021 10:23 am
Hi all ... my Garmin Edge 810 is finally dying ... when following a course it's battery is only lasting a few hours. I need to upgrade. I would like to stay with Garmin as it's familiar and I don't have any major issues with the 810. I have no need for power meter or dynamics data ... just want to be able to record rides and navigate with pre-loaded routes. The Garmin Edge Explore comes up regularly when looking at reviews (DC RAINMAKER was impressed) but it looks like it's been discontinued (although Ebay and Amazon still have them available for about AU$350) ... What are people recommending? ... Is buying from Ebay/Amazon a good idea? (I presume the Edge Explore is shipped to Australia with Australian maps).

My understanding is that Garmin does not provide a warranty on eBay purchases. As to Amazon, I am not sure about the warranty but if the supplier is in say the USA and country-specific maps are included I would expect a US map, not Australia.
I use a Garmin 1030 mainly for the big screen. I notice that Garmin Australia has the Edge 830 listed which I assume is the latest version of your Edge 810. The Edge 830 is priced around $600 by the looks - https://www.ja-gps.com.au/Garmin/edge-8 ... -computer/

Thanks Andrew ... OK ... interesting re no warranty from ebay ... Amazon usually make a big deal about their friendly returns policy but I'll dig a bit deeper about it. I've left questions on both sites re which maps come with units shipped to Australia so waiting for a response. The 1030 is $800 ($350 for the Explore) and has a whole lot of features and functionality I would never use (as did the 810). Screen size is a big factor for me too.

I have version 1 which after protracted shipping and development has become an excellent unit with nice hi-res map page.
