New 27″ x 1 3/8″ Tyre SwiftTire ( Made by Panaracer )

Postby Thoglette » Mon Apr 09, 2018 5:57 pm

Exciting find today - a 1 3/8" tyre that's not meant for coffee carts.

I don't know anything other than it exists. In black and tan.
http://www.swifttire.com/product/sand-c ... lding-tan/

Found through Ryan's Rebuilds blog, also mentioned in this 27" performance tyre thread on bikeforums

Back in 1 1/4" land the thread also notes the existence of Soma's New Xpress 27" Skinwall Tire

I've been running the Swft Tire Sand Canyons on an old Trek 720 that has 27 in wheels. Very comfortable and ride nicely, only downside is that small stones tend to get stuck in the tread and make an annoying noise. Not cheap when i purchased them around $50 each from the US.

I think I got them from Loose screws before they became a gun shop. Around 50 AUD incl. shipping.

Finally bought a pair of these using AustPost's ShopMate American drop box. It works.

They ended up at c. $70AU each landed. Which is pretty much the RRP for a Pasella 32-622 (noting that no-one is importing the 630 size :-( )

It's also pretty close to what the last set of folding 32-630s from bike24 cost me. (While the wire bead ones are cheaper the shipping is worse resulting in a only a small saving)

Thanks to some glass on my normal commute the current Paselas are off (still with a few thousand km left but the tread's cut on the front) and the Swiftires are on.

The install is, not surprisingly, pretty similar to the Pasela product. No tools required (but I should have washed the wheels and old tyres first :-( too much car-dust :-( ) and, as usual, needed a little wiggling once pumped up to 20psi to get the beads where they should be.

So far, so Panaracer. Which is a good thing. They do have deeper tread than the Paselas but otherwise are similar, just a little bigger.

Depending on how these turn out, I can see I'm going to have to import a bunch of these or the Paselas. The next 5000k will tell.

I'm interested to hear how these go.

Am slowly doing a path-racer type build on 27s and these would look brilliant, and that little bit of tread actually suits the path-racer vibe.

Moruya Bicycles still carry the Schwalbe Marathon in 27x1-1/4 and the Schwalbe hs159 , also in 27x1-1/4. Just for future reference.

First impressions are entirely unsurprising : They feel awfully like the Paselas, just a bit bigger. I’m probably running a little more pressure than they need (65ish) and I can’t feel the extra tread depth.

(Ps thanks for the lead - Moruya is my go-to LBS even though it’s the other side of the country exactly because they have the weird and the wonderful. )

What width do they measure when mounted? I've been contemplating 3/8 tyres for a few years but wanted to have some confidence they will fit at least one of my 27" frames before pulling the trigger.

Just to keep this topic going, what other tyre choices are people finding for their old 27 inch (ISO 630) wheels? Is there anything still available locally at a decent price?

Up until recently I was getting Vittoria Zaffiros for about $30 a tyre from ebay (in either 27x1-1/8 or 27x1-1/4), but sources seem to have dried up lately.

I'm still running a set of the 27x1-1/4 Zaffiros on my old tourer. Definitely not world beaters by any standard, but they're a fairly generously sized 1-1/4 with reasonable rolling performance - somewhat limited puncture resistance though.

The only thing I seem to be able to get easily at the moment are the cheap bike corp tyres like this one. https://www.bikecorp.com.au/rubber-seal ... road-block

Has anyone tried the above?

Are there any other suggestions for a reasonably priced 27 inch tyre locally available?

As mentioned above, Moruya Bicycles carry Schwalbe tyres in 27" .

Continental also make a 27" variant of the Gator and of the SuperSport in 27x1-1/4, and you may find local stock in an LBS (maybe) although can also be ordered from Chain Reaction.

SJS Cycles (UK) carry a number of 27" tyres, Panaracer and Conti mainly but at good prices.

In my experience the Contis tend to measure a complete size small. That is, their "32mm" measures in at 28mm on my rims, vs 30 for the Panaracers. However the SS are good, sticky and supple tyres, if you can get them. I'd happily use them again.

I've not tried 'tator skins however for my use puncture protection is a waste of time that just makes the tyre less supple.

They measure about 32mm on my 1 1/4 size rims. That's about 2mm bigger than the Pasella 32mm and 4mm bigger than the Conti 32mm. Can't compare with the Schwalbe (Anyone? Ferris?)

That's a shame, the cheap Duro 1-1/4" I've been using for the last decade or so are already 32mm (as a 1-1/4" should be). Hopefully the block tread 3/8 Duro might be around the 35mm I'm after. The 1-1/4 are great of course but a little more would be good when the road gets really rough.

I don't have any of them in the shed currently to compare with (oh, an excuse to go shopping! :D )

bBut I recall that they were visibly bigger than the Contis. And I've got 27" rims in the shed which result in different widths once mounted.

The Vee Rubber Touring tyre, whilst fairly entry-level, sits a bit bigger than a standard 27x1-1/4.

Kenda make a 27x1-3/8 "gravel" type tyre which is sort of affordable but I imagine would need to be bought via eBay

Another 27x1.25 tyre is the Specialized Roadsport Flakjacket. These are not a heavy tyre and are quite supple. I found them for sale at Epic Cycles in Brisbane for 29 dollars each. I like them.
I have used Vee Rubber 27x1.25 In the past. These were recommended for the Noosa Strada Bianche event and are sometimes available at BigW stores for 20 dollars each. While tough and quite puncture resistant, in my experience they are very hard to get on and off the rim.
Which is no fun at all :(

I actually have 27x1-1/4 Specialized Roadsport Flakjacket tyres on my parts-bin bike. Surprisingly good for an entry-level tyre. My US friends tell me they're widely available over there but I haven't found an easy way to get them here. My set were buried in my stash (NOS) from a bulk buy of bits a few years ago.

I've also found them extremely tight on multiple new and old rims, but as they generally only need to come off once (when the tyre is worn down to the canvas) it's not much of an issue :D In over a decade I've only lost air 3 times, one from a broken beer bottle slashing through the tyre, one from hitting a timber bridge at 40+kmh, and one where the carcass delaminated and exploded after over 100kms on gravel roads so rough I thought I'd get concussion from the shaking.

My one experience with Specialized tyres (albeit in 700C) about 10 years ago was so poor I haven't looked at them since.

Quick update. Eighteen months later and 5,312 km later, I'm pretty darn happy.

Not much sign of wear (though there must be) where as I generally am 1,000km from the casing at this point on the Paselas or Conti Ultras. Hard to be sure as my route has changed a bit: less chip-seal, more smooth tarmac. Meh.

They remain a little noisy (a bit of a whine at high speeds) due to having more prominent tread (v.s. Pasela) but beyond that they're pretty similar: the extra width is an incremental improvement for my mixed-surface riding.

Unfortunately, freight forwarding (like AustPost’s soon-to-close ShopMate ) is the only option.

Bummer. Are you going to try and replace with the same?

BTW. Does anyone have any leads on a decent 27 inch tyre locally available, they getting a bit thin on the ground here. I've been waiting a while to see if anyone in Aus was going to get restocked on the Vittora Zaffiro 27x1 1/4 I've been running, but pretty sure they're gone for good now. :(

They've had several model revisions over the years, but the last set I bought where absolute crackers, a very generous 1-1/4, they measure about 36mm mounted! I wish I'd bought a few more while they were cheap and plentiful, they roll reasonably well and are brilliant on gravel.

Looks like I'll probably give the Duros a try when I wear out this set of zaffo's. At least they still seem cheap and readily available.
