New trailer - don't laugh too much

Recently bought a Yak, for camping and shops. But it was overwhelmed by more than two bags (for life). So I sold it again.

Decided on a cheap China job - Pro Series copy of the Burley Normad (earlier version). Having two wheels it's more stable for the shops, and am not intending to camp with this one.
Thing is its' massive, am sure the Normad is smaller? Its' bigger than the 680mm max width allowed in WA but am not bothered.

But the hitch fouls on the raised bit of the dropouts, so I've got a Burley hitch adapter on the way!




Always had my eye on an Extrawheel for the camping, just undecided.

Any trailer is a good trailer as far as I am concerned.

Plus... the bigger the trailer the bigger the bookshelf you can take home on it! (do that on your Yak...)

Umm. Why and at what weight and type of load? Drybags?
In the early stages of looking at post covid dog packing and these seem to be the just the right size. Issue being hound is tall, lanky but only 25kgs so would need to bed out the tray. More single and double track with on-dirt road stuff. Plan is then OS so a pack down for the plane would be ideal. Not that keen on two wheels but if so would think Burley Nomad-ish
Have a heap of differing types and sizes of both front and rear panniers and racks plus frame and seat post bags to spread the load, so if poss..... would welcome your quick thoughts on all + and - things bobs.

Only long term dog touring I've read about was a guy who fitted a sidecar to his recumbent trike. But his was a much bigger dog.

Any trailer than can come apart can fly... the problem is finding one with a detachable drawbar.

I'm a bit of a Carry Freedom fan (https://carryfreedom.com) as I love my City. The Y might be the kind of thing you want given it breaks down and can be done in various configs. Issue being of course ain't no one in Oz sells them! About the only trailers you get here are dog/kid ones and they don't tend to come apart easily.

and you could use their bamboo trailer plans to make your own!

Good info this! The brand really look like what I could use. I kinda like the Jugaad type bamboo option for o/s.
I also tend towards giving away stuff at the end of a trip instead of bringing it back to Aust, so the timber take some wheels and frames bits, build, then give away suits me.

I crossed from east to west a decade ago (NSW to WA) towing a “large” Carryfreedom Y-frame and enjoyed it’s ownership immensely, only parting ways when a move to NZ forced me to choose between it and my Extrawheel single wheeled trailer.
I didn’t have the funds to raise it’s priority over other possessions and shipping costs meant cutting back on what I owned, hence we parted ways.
I was recently thrilled to discover that after a period of time where none could be found, a mark 2 version is now released and available.
Given that I spotted them available in NZ (I believe now produced in Germany), I’d not be surprised if a decent online search finds them for sale in Australia.

Is it easier to pull 9kg trailer, such as a BOB + 16kg camping gear and water on board, or better to have a 500g rack and 2 x 8kg camping gear in pannier bags?

In my experience trailers are better than heavy stuff on racks because heavy stuff on racks unless very low tends to unbalance you a bit and make the bike handle heavily.

I hardly notice the trailer except hauling it up hills when it's full.

It's hard to tell. It depends on a few things like contour and wind direction. I.E No wind, steep uphill scenario, better panniers. Headwind, flats better trailer.
But we are splitting hairs here yeah. I say; when you tour dont carry nothing; but make a few exceptions based on what you really need. Those few exceptions can really be a Lot of things. In my case 4 panniers and a trailer.
Basically carry what you really need safely by any means. I better add some weight by using a trailer than overloading my racks and break them.

Commuter Cycles and a few other bike shops that specialise in Touring sell them.
I bought mine from Commuter cyles.
Only thing is if you need some accessories for the trailer that are not in high demand in OZ like I.E a wider axle or a container box ; you might have to buy directly from Germany or wait a long time.
I totally love my trailer. I also use high quality racks Surly and Tubus ; but the trailer is more confidence inspiring. You know it keeps on truckin foreva ha ha ha.
I modded mine to be able to carry a full size suitcase and then it packs itself in the suitcase after I throw away all the water bottles and food bags.
Only thing is I wished I could find a way to have 3 or 4 inch x 16 or 20 inch tires and rims for it. I ride a bit of sand in central OZ
