Insurance for cycling

Postby Cycling Wombat » Fri Oct 20, 2023 2:14 pm

I did a search but couldn't see a specific thread related to cycling insurance, please move or delete of there is already

How are people covered if they have an accident while cycling? And if there are 3rd parties involved?

I did have Bicycle NSW insurance for a while but let it lapse as I wasn't riding as much. Wondering if it is actually useful in the event of an accident.

Check your household insurance. Mine covers me for
"If you have contents cover under this policy, we will cover you against any claim for compensation or
expenses which you become legally liable to pay for:
 the death of, or personal injury to, a person; or
 the damage to property;
resulting from an occurrence during the period of insurance anywhere in the world."

They have a list of things they won't cover liability for such as motorcycles and drones but they explicitly consider bikes and ebikes as contents. $30 mil of cover.

Do read the policy carefully. I had to move from Shannons because they explicitly said they did not cover ebikes.

Note also they usually exclude cycling in competition. (Though that probably doesn't apply to someone just getting back into cycling).

If youb need it, in most states there’ll be a “peak body” (eg West Cyle in WA) which bundles 3rd party insurance into their membership dues.

I would rather just keep with home insurance. How mine are done.

I’m wary of peak bodies, with the exception of maybe one. I also made a point of not joining the national cycling organisation.

Be careful of home contents insurance cover. Some (like AAMI) do NOT cover the bicycle or any 3rd party damage under their standard home contents policy.

If you take out the extra cover that covers items (including bicycles in use) outside of the home, then they will cover both the bicycle and any 3rd party damage.

I discovered this in 2021 when I was taken out by a SUV - somehow AAMI had removed my extra cover a couple of years earlier (probably when I bitched about the price increase) and my damage to the SUV was not covered and neither was the damage to my bike.

It is worth reading carefully.

Yes. That’s a whole other thread.

Think I'll get it added to my home insurance. Will have to give them a call though as can't tell exactly from the conditions of my current policy

Should be able to link it to your car insurance as a "transport" insurance.

Be very wary of all insurance providers.

After my little 'incident' it turns out I'm essentially completely uninsured.

The home insurance didn't cover the bike at all outside the house (CGU). I thought I'd arranged this, however on reading the confirmation e-mail it stated that I could, but I hadn't. Flat denial.

I also had Auscycling insurance, mainly for events. The trauma cover there has $3000 maximum expenses, a $1000 excess, and $500 a week for income protection with a 28 day waiting period. Utterly useless in pretty much any circumstance.

A very considerable number of home/contents/vehicle etc. insurers in Australia are owned by gigantic and exceptionally profitable SunCorp, so you can expect a pretty tight (and expensive) ride with any and all of them, CGU being just one of many. Shop "outside the square" for a better deal.

No chance of insuring my toys in house insurance — they're a much lower priority than everything else, including the car and lots of other contents. I do have VeloSure insurance (recommended to me more than a decade ago by other cyclists who had been covered by that crew for a long time and had no problems), but they will only insure bikes up to 4 years old — after that, well, I presume it is 'upgrade time'!?

I have 3rd party through AusCycling... I can't say I have read the details too closely.

My ebike is covered a listed item outside the home on my contents insurance.
