No love for old Malvern Stars unless they are a 5 Star?
I purchased this a 1958 2 Star a while ago and am wondering what it would have looked like when it left the shop.
It is currently fitted with a coaster brake.
Since owning it I have replaced a 27" wheel with a 28". Changed the flatbars it came with for drops.
Does anyone know if they came with 27" or 28" wheels standard?
The clearance is pretty tight at the front with a 28.
I bought this because I loved (what is left of) the original paintwork.
Sadly, it is bit messed up at the front and I'm not sure how the stars should look.
The plan is to give it a sympathetic make over. Not a sandblast and powdercoat - Sorry.
I plan to hold on to this one. Might even look out for some more. I like the simple symmetry of the 2 stars at the front.
If you have a sample in the shed, could you please post some photos.
Also, was this called a Star Champ or was that the roadster (bolt on seat stay) version? Bit had to tell from the '58 newspaper graphics.
Thanks.

Definitely 27” wheels. Stars would have been white, with red infill. Would have been the Champ, the ones with bolt on stays were gents roadsters or Roadstars.

The 1958 Champ was described in this advertisement from the Canberra Times, which I assume you referred to.
The bike has mudguards, so clearance is required for them, which supports Warren's advice.
Many would advocate careful conservation of the paintwork, and you are also to follow that path.
If you need any suggestions for specific treatments, please ask. It is a path many have already trodden.

Thank you so much for your time and replies. Both of you have been inspirational in my ventures, so I'm grateful for your time and information.
Thank you Philip, that was the advertisement I was referring to.
I have just re-read the fine print to find it originally had Magistroni fluted cranks. Pretty sure I have a set, so am keen to fit them and score the old set of Williams that it currently has for another bike.
I thought about 'guard clearance after I asked the question. So, yes, it makes sense.
Whilst trying to collect a few old Malvern Stars I have inadvertently picked up a few old Speedwells along the way.
More about them another day in a new post.
Back to Malvern Stars, I also have a similar frameset (repainted by a previous owner) with what appear to be plated rear dropouts.
Given that this one is from 1956, I'm wondering if Malvern Star did an Olympic version of the Champ?
Thanks again,
Grant

I have a 2 star with identical paintwork and got it brand new in 1963. (Possibly old stock)
3 speed shimano
Flat bars. Twist grip gear change
Metal pedals with toe grips and leather straps
If I can work out how to post photos, I'll put some up.

Here are some photos of a 2 star that I bought recently but discovered it had a bent frame and forks due to a head on collision. I am disappointed as I really like this bike.
Hopes this helps for your reference.

Hi oldbikeman looks like a ripper, pity about the bent frame tubes. Any idea of the year for this bike. I have a roadster with the same steer tube lugs, it is a 60s bike, just trying to nail it down a bit closer.
