Some 'dated' bike brand sub forums removed

Postby AUbicycles » Wed Nov 09, 2022 8:35 am

Without naming there brands, at the bottom of the forum there is a section for cycling brands with brand-specific discussion.

Some of the brands however have fallen out of trend or maybe 'we know everything there is to know'. There were very few discussion threads or no discussion for some time. These sub forums have been permanently closed and the discussion threads inside moved over (primarily) to the main "General Discussion' thread so they are not lost.

Currently the Norther Territory and the Regional and Country discussion threads are also on the edge. I doubt the NT thread will be culled.

Any thoughts on more housekeeping?

Bianchi could go too, last post back in 2021. Malvern Star, Campag and Specialized also similarly inactive.

Don't know about 'emerging' brands, Merida was pretty well established when I lived OS over a decade ago, just a suggestion for perhaps a general purpose brand topic, even if there's not enough discussion to carry a whole forum.

The update is complete... and to help focus... we may have to remove Tasmania and Northern Territory from Australia (forum sections).

The country and regional section got a lot of votes a while back... but has been quite and probably needs to be retired.

Also childrens bikes is not very actively - so welcome a few more opinions before slimming it down.

I am not aware of the past and the voting. But considering the present day, there are way too many sub-forums for the amount of traffic.

I would consider rolling everything up into the GENERAL AUSTRALIAN CYCLING TOPICS group of sub-forums. There are enough sub-forums in there to cover all the present day discussion.

Trek has last post March 2022, so it must be on the chopping block soon.

A general bike ownership type sub-forum to cover all the brands might do.

Another forum I’m on has a section for brands and one thread per brand. Eg under the ‘owners forum’ would be a great big long trek owners thread, giant owners, pinarello owners etc. mods might merge or split threads as required

I'd vote for moving Duck's Shimano compatibility post to a sticky in the Bike Shed section

I see the Vivente brand is goneski .....shame, they are a good bike but not many riders have them.

They've gone upmarket now, Only available with Rolhoff hubs and Gates belt drives and retail for $6,600.....I don't think I'd get value out of that......no more derailleur models in the Vivente line up anymore but they are being built in Tassie these days and are on Made to order.

Cheers

Yes, twice the price of your Surly Disc Trucker but I suspect competitive with Thorn, Tout Terrain etc.

Since getting a Rohloff I don't miss the maintenance of a deraileur equipped bike!

I think having the Bike Brands section right at the bottom of the menu may be a part of the problem of traffic not getting there - it's a long scroll down and people generally don't have the attention span to go that far..... Shuffling it up the menu a bit may encourage more traffic.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

The Garmin and Cannondale forums are pretty lifeless too, nothing since a year - they could be removed as well.

Trek forum is even more outdated. That leaves the Shimano forum on the critical list.

Cycling brands is now gone - with all topics moved into The Bike Shed and Ducks compatibility post stickied.

I move the market-place up to get more visibility.

I've only just noticed the changes.

I'd like to see some other related bits merged. Making it more user friendly at the same time.
