Hi:
Probably the last update on "TrikeTragic head that looks like a map of WA"... :)

I had my last "procedural clinic" with the Alfred today, dressing removed from the donor site on my thigh, stitches removed from my noggin. Duly inspected by Alfred Plastics registrar, and given the all clear to get back on the trike, and resume playing basketball (he suggested I play with a protective helmet, already purchased.) Woo hoo!

Cheers

I am amused that when I go to see a doctor & she asks how I am, my conditioned response is good thanks, while in reality something's not right which is why I made the appointment.

RUOK sometimes elicits the same response, we're conditioned to say everything is fine.

I was reading do you have 8 minutes and thought it was an interesting approach to break down that conditioning & indicate a desire for support
Anything you can do, I can do slower

FYI prolific commuter Andrew Cowley isn't 100% ok. He had a fall a few days ago, landed on his side, and broke his femur. He's posting in another forum so he's on the mend.

We've all had a bad run with broken bones lately!

Best of luck for everyone's recovery. Although I think I have the record for 'most bones broken' mine are by comparison fairly small fry bones. A femur is major!

Oh crap! That’s dreadful news and one of the worst bones to break too. He will probably be off the bike for a long time. :( Been there, done that and permanently worse off.

That’s sobering. I had a colleague who lost his life to that. I don’t know how he still managed to be so upbeat when things were plainly so crap. He was always assisted by his carer.

Renowned Aussie cycling coach (Gary West) lost his life to MND (Motor Neurone Disease) several years ago. He was credited with getting Anna Meares to return to the Track and excel once more on the World stage after she was seriously injured in 2008.

First proper outside ride after the crash which was three months ago today.

Gravel bike and mainly bikeway - rode up to the northside and did 30km with a mate coming back from a bone marrow transplant, so we were a good match!

Ended up with 71km/532m with a fairly cruisy 142W (average 123bpm) and felt pretty good. Sneaky uphill tarmac KOM on the way home which is an embarrassment to the two guys holding it who presumably weren't on a 9.5kg gravel bike with 42mm tyres.

Strange feelin to have cardiovascular fitness essentially unchanged or even better after 12 weeks in the garage, but a fair bit of upper body weakness. Will enjoy taking it easy the next few months I think.

Thanks! It's so much nicer.

Keeping it mainly to bike paths and quiet roads for now. Every indoor trainer session turns into a smashfest in comparison. I'm actually going to put the top tube bag on the gravel bike and pick up coffee beans with it tomorrow. Good to use a bike for actual practical stuff and not just going fast!

Yes!
Back on the trike twice this week. First ride on Thursday a relatively gentle test to make sure the donor patch on my thigh (still pretty sensitive) could cope with the high repetition compress - lengthen of cycle strokes under lycra. A smear of saddle cream made sure it all worked OK.
Yesterday: slightly longer ride, few more (in)decent hills - no problems. Same preparation.
So, will now work on building up some more trike fitness with more frequent and longer rides. Oh, and basketball is back on for me this week, with a helmet. 8)

Random thing I noticed (it’s been out for a while) - in Apple phones with iOS 15 or newer there are background sounds you can have it play.

These are things like sound of ocean, night time, rain, etc.

These are actually very helpful to shut out other distractions or just to unwind. I use this with noise cancelling headphones. Really excellent.

I aint as bad as you yet but am heading that way. On duty from 0700 yesterday until 0500 this morning when I pulled the pin. They'd have kept sending us to inappropriately triaged nonsense if we didn't.
Took me 2 hours to get to sleep and I got about 4.5 hours.
Part of the reason shift work is associated with higher rates of chronic disease and shorter life expectancy I guess.

I have tried melatonin, zolpidem (prescription only and utterly useless) and doxylamine succinate (restavit).
Restavit is the best but I use it infrequently as the more you use anything the less effective it becomes ime. A short term aid only. :(

I've found nothing that works for me. :(

You better hope that you don't reach my level of sleep deprivation because it isn't good. I'm lucky in a way because all of my vital organs are still in good working order and the only meds that I take is Dex and I don't take it every day, even though I should. :|
