Is the fixie trend over… retire this subforum?

In it’s hey day, every kid and their dog wanted a single speed bike. The brands were building them, the shops selling them but it’s no surprise that the demand and interest has fallen steeply, but would it be fair to say it is completely over?

For examplwe, retro MTBing is still growing and trends go in cycles so I expect fixies to become popular again when the next generation rediscover it … and have all the same questions.

Right now this forum is not seeing many new posts… even though there are a lot of fixies and single-speeds in garages and sheds (yep, I have one) so is it time to give this sub forum a golden watch and send it to retirement?

What do you think, retire the forum (move posts elsewhere), just leave it or something else?

Leave it be. I sold my fixie (actually a SS coaster) in ‘81 because they were so old fashioned. Moved up to a “ten speed” as they were the Big Thing. Shoulda hung onto it:-).

The Fixed-Gear Apocalypse was so long ago that Snobbie is now ironically referencing it re: peak gravel.

The way fashion cycles are accelerating it’s likely that by the time someone else actually reads this, fixies (under a new name, of course) will be The Next Big Thing(tm) already and we’ll be overrun by neo-hipsters wielding equipment for whatever the coffee-replacement is. Artisanal, of course.

The one and only fixed gear alleycat I've participated in was back in 2013, and even then the fad was on its deathbed. As of 2024 it's way beyond dead.

I thought about turning my tt bike into one when the derailleur hanger got broken of about 9 years ago. Never got there though the frame is still hanging on the wall.

I still commute on a single speed, running 40mm to smash through winter debris.

Now on the hunt for something a little prettier for summer.

No harm in leaving it, and from time to time it may still cature interest for some.

It has faded away - for now. It'll be back, probably a few more years from now when the electronic shifting fans lose support for their Bluetooth shift pods or they can't get a replacement thingy to suit and they throw their hands in the air and want to simplify their riding once again.

I built a fixie amd still have it. Unfortunately my commute changed and the fixie is not friendly for the steep hills I currently 'enjoy'. However, this thread has reminded me and maybe I'll get it out for a detour commute again soon.

You could probably merge it to something else, but you could also probably merge all racing together, eg,track cycling and international racing and road-riding into the one thing.

Doesn't particularly bother me one way or the other as I don't really read any of those forums.
