HOw big is big enough - fan for use with indoor trainer?

Postby steve-waters » Sat Mar 26, 2011 2:33 pm

Hi,
About to buy Kurt Kinetic Rock and roll trainer (will get the torpedo 7 rollers once they come on sale again as well) - a fan is a definite but just how big?

Bunnings has 750mm fans with 350W motors is that too big?

Anyone got a guess for CFM that would be good?

It gets pretty damn hot and humid in Port Macquarie so I am thinking the bigger the better.

Anyone already got a fan that does the job for them?

Something like these:

http://www.esidirect.com.au/Industrial- ... 986952.htm

http://www.esidirect.com.au/Portable-Fl ... 986964.htm

Is one enough - is it maybe best to buy the trainer use it with our current home fans to get base to work with then go from there?

Cheers,
Steve

I've always used a $20 special positioned about a metre away on full. I still sweat a ton though. Didn't bother me when I was using my old exercise bike, but now I'm using rollers on my actual roadie I'm a bit more concerned about corrosive sweat. I got a bike thong that seems to protect most of my frame pretty well. That said I'm only planning on riding inside predominately in winter/rainy days though.

The bigger / stronger the better....ideal is to be a bit cold in a singlet so that you can always put a short sleeve on.

tll - this is what I was thinking so it is really just buy the biggest fan you can (or are prepared to) afford.

Yes,pretty much comes down to how much you want to spend...aside from the sweat issue, over heating means you won't be getting as an effective training session.

120W or more should be enough. Obviously more may be better but then you may not be able to hear the TV.

As said, definitely go the biggest you can afford.

I have 2 standard pedestal fans and while they are good for a light ride or a warmup, they fall well short when it comes to the intense stuff.

The wind is a good distraction from the pain  The more the better.

I use a little "Vornado" which sits on the floor. It's very compact (about 300mm total diameter) & has deep pitched blades with only a 60 Watt motor. It's advertised more as an air mover or circulator, but it shifts a tonne of air for the size of it.
Gas propulsion.......it's natural don't fight it.

Don't know about trainers but there's this big mongrel fan at work, 600mm X 550W to cool the monitor bank. It does the job well but the drone above low speed is rather distracting, might be worth thinking about.

Bigger and more powerful is better. I have one of those pedestal fans and it made a huge difference to my indoor training. The floor model I don't think is powerful enough. Check the volume of air they move per unit time to compare. Also, the wider the air stream, the more of your whole body it cools.

They are however noisy, so keep that in mind if you are inside the house with others about (vs in garage/shed etc).

Cool thanks everyone for the replies - think I am going to go the bunnings option as it oscillates as well.

Thread resurrection...

Looking at updating my torture chamber and one critical upgrade is a new fan(s). Thinking floor fans as if roughly wheel size can be stored in the wheels shelf when not in use...

Any current suggestions?

Found a couple of Kincrome models that are new in their range.

https://www.kincrome.com.au/500mm-heavy-duty-floor-fan" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

111W 500mm 5 blades 110 m3/min Air Delivery on special for $119.

Next model up looks to be

https://www.kincrome.com.au/600mm-indus ... e-drum-fan" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Although only 100mm larger fan, the motor is a lot larger at 250W, 151m3/min Air Delivery for nearly double the price. Overkill or worthwhile going for the bigger model? Might have trouble storing up with the wheels at close to 15kg compared to under 6kg... :?

Hey man why not go one of each?

If you can pony up I would go the large ones having said that I think you would be fine with two small ones I used get by in Port Macquaire with smaller fans than that the wife never let me splash the cash.

But the bigger the better.

Space is limited, so keen on the best compact fan with sufficient air flow...

You must put the giant fan behind you, tailwind all the way!

I tried one of the Kinchrome fans. I'm sure it'd be good for the trainer. Useless for double purposing for an indoor fan though, super noisy.

Thanks joomz. Which model did you try? Was it the 50cm or 60cm model?

Would be purely for the trainer so should hopefully be drowned out by the stereo...

I tried the 50cm floor one. Just crank the tunes, should be ok as long as the neighbours are good!

I have 2 50cm Moretti's and 1 75cm Dynastream. All from Bunno's.
They are all connected to a remote operated power board so they can be switched on or off as needed from the bike.

Wow! I have 1x Moretti that you have and it suffices. I still sweat like a mofo, but it stops me from overheating!

If the room is hot then fans won't help much anyway. Theres no point blowing hot air around. I sweat big time despite my 3 fans but at least I can finish the session.

Put the fans behind you instead of in front. You will go heaps faster with a tailwind ;)

I run a portable Air-conditioner plus one fan. Portable AC are cheaper than the industrial fans, I don't know why more people don't snap them up instead. Mine has my screen, computer and sound system sitting on top of it. Too cold for use in winter though.
