Hi, I am a newby to the forum, but born and bred rider from NL, now living in Sydney. I ride nearly every day. I commute to work on a Merida Speeder, and I ride My Cannondale Synapse road bike for longer rides once or twice per week. And I own a Bkool Smart Pro Trainer since very recently to keep fit in winter and train for the Tour de l'Etape.

I am member of Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club and UNSW CC.

Hi BNA Women!

I'm a newbie to cycling, did a lot 30 years ago and nothing in between.

Location?
Australian vagabond

Road, Mountain, Track... what's your style?
In 1986 i began buying rusty old fixies and rebuilding them for pocket money. I fell in love with a "10 speed racer" i completely rebuilt and painted metalic red and we rode everywhere around Lake Macquarie and Newcastle. We left the guys eating our dust everyday after school was out. In 88-90 i road the tracks and hardtop in the Kosciuszko NP extensively after moving there. Loved both mountain bike and road touring.

Current bike/s?

Riding since?

About to start my first serious tour this summer

Riding because?
It is naturally the next big adventure after walking 17,000kms solo unsupported around Australia. All the way around i met riders from all over the world doing short tours, crossings or laps.
For most of the walk i knew i would be riding next.
During the walk i was limited by speed and water so some places that called to me were passed by, mostly those old corrugated red dirt highways through the outback. Now i'm going back to ride them.
I follow/ed on insta a collection of amazing women riding. I was especially inspired by Fredricka Ek and Ann Johansson.

Favourite ride

Occupation?
I just became the 1st woman to walk around Australia solo unaccompanied 3 weeks ago so i'm hoping soon i can say writer and speaker ;)

Goals?
Ride around Australia

Most embarrassing moment on the bike?

Best moment on the bike?
Summer riding in the alps, mostly the part after the climb!

A flevobike? Only seen them in pics. What are they like compared to your normal type recumbent.

Well OK, there is no such thing, but your usual 2 wheel rear wheel drive with vaguely normal front wheel geometry...

Flat bar road bike

Postby Happyhunting » Mon Oct 08, 2018 1:23 pm

Hi Ladies

I am new to riding and would need some advice/ help
:D

A little about me:

Location: Melbourne
Age: late twenties
Height: 170cm
Weight: 55-60kg

I am looking to buy a flat bar road bike that I can commute to and from work say 35km a day.
I would like something with the following:

- lightweight
- low maintenance
- How much does it cost to maintain a bike on a yearly basis If I do say 200Km a week?
- under $500 (I don't mind buying second hand)
- How many years would I get out of a decent bike?
- What is the best time to buy? Should I wait for the boxing day sales?

Please suggest where I can buy from
- online?
- LBS?
- Brand and type of bike?

Also would love to join a riding club on a Saturday or Sunday morning.

Thank you ladies :D

Hope to see you guys out on the road.
