In the last few days I've had messages from ebay regarding verification of user details and bank accounts.

Ebay now requires the upload of a photo ID to be kept on file with them. Also, re-verification of bank accounts, one option of which is direct login to your account through ebay for verification. Yeah, that's not happening. They can verify via micro-deposits, though.

Might be sayonara, ebay real soon.

Seems like whoever is running it now is intent on destroying the joint. Every change they make seems intended to make them harder and more expensive to deal with,

I've had an ebay account for almost 20 yrs. been buying (rather than selling) the past 10 yrs.
in recent months, when i tried selling something, i was asked to provide proof of ID, bank details, etc .. (information i didn't have to provide back in the day)

i can understand it given the strict anti-money-laundering and know-your-customer requirements these days, especially as ebay is integrated into a payment gateway. for that reason, none of these requirements apply to Gumtree and FB.

and on that note, i have noticed with increasing regularity the proliferation of fake profiles and scams on both platforms, especially FB. things appear to have spiralled out of control since covid started.
News to me. Ii have made a few purchases recently and have not been asked for such information. And I would never provide it. I hope you didn't.
I'd seriously question the legitimacy of any site that asked for that. Sounds like you have hit a phishing page.

Yeah, seems to only be for sellers. Fair enough, I just won't sell there.

Only for Ebay sellers.

For buyers - it's business as usual.

I’ve closed my business account (they wanted 10% of sale+postage and access to my bank account, amongst other things) and won’t be selling privateer. I’m keeping my private account as it’s still the best way to buy weird stuff in small qtys. but even that’s changing as the web-store-as-a-service offering get easier to use

What about Bike Exchange or something else? I haven't tried Bike Exchange but it seems to have a bit of a used market now not just shops.
Seems well set up and the fee structure not too bad?

I'm loving the way they've had $10 off popups on every item I look at for the last 12 months, spruiking After Pay. "Hurry, offer expires in 5 days" or some cr*p. For the whole last year!

Done well out of ebay during the height of Covid lockdowns where people were desperate for home exercise gear, I had a fair bit of stuff I sold for a lot more than it cost me new via auction, I couldn't believe the bids i got but it was hampered a lot by slow deliveries as Australis Post was swamped by people buying online.
Ebay now has its own pay service as it has dumped paypal and they apparently were playing silly beggers with account holders with customers claiming non arrival of goods when they had actually received them and go claim refunds etc.
I was in a resellers fb group and the stories be sellers were horrifying and ebay gave seller no support whatsoever so I think ol fleabay has shot themselves in the foot.
