I am a competitive bugger i know that. But more so because he was on a roadie and i am on a hybrid. Yes Hybrids are fast but nothing like Roadies. That was proven on the day i did the ride as there was a road bike i was traveling near. On the hills i left him behind :D but on the decents he quickly caught up with me.

Manage 21km each way normally six days a week rain or shine. Hills area in Sydney to Richmond. Get a few races now and then and met a good bunch of others training on the same route.....

My actual commute is about 8.5km each way, but I tend to mix it up a bit. Commuting to work I vary between usually a 15km ride and 20km ride, I've just added in a 27km ride to change it up again. On the way home I'll go one of two ways, one is about 10km and the other 12km.

Drive half way and ride the rest.
Ride in one day, bus home. Bus in the next and ride home.

I've known blokes who've done both.

Richard

yeah...ride with the wind if any on your back , train if its going to be in your face, either way. Taking the bike on train if necessary.

40km commute to work i would think, among other issues, is a bit testing for bike reliability especially tyres, sooner or later you will lose a tyre or its air at least, and whether you can fix it or not, will make you late.

also when applying for a job, never mention that you might be using a bike to come and go to it, a lot of bosses and probably HR people will see this as not being reliable or committed to reliability.
(they may also be hostile to cyclists generally, who knows)
Let them assume you are going to drive , then start showing up on the bike as if its your new fitness fad or something, once you are established.

Obviously none of this applies if its a public sector job. then you are probably encouraged to be a tofu-eating anarchist dedicated to a small carbon footprint, and as for your reliability, who cares in the public sector if u actually make it in or not.

Hills or flat?

If flat, 40k is easy. If hills, on the other hand, welcome to it... :)

I walk to work. All 40 metres of it. I live accross the road from work. If it makes anyone feel better, I jump a fence and fight with some shrubbery most days.

My commute is 23 km each way, do it 2-4 times a week, depending on weather and work commitments.

I used to commute 30kms each way, flat so it only took about 70 minutes each way. My commute's 6-7 kms now, depending.

Distance isn't so much a factor so much as time, it would seem. Research in to this has been carried out in Sweden, it would seem that a commute of 45 minutes or more in one direction results in a 40% increase in divorce rates[1].

Yeah, I'm divorced :P

shortest route: 8.9kms

normal route: 19.9kms

long with hills: 35kms

long with flat: 40kms

it's nice to have so many options.

edit: if i take the bus(es) it's about 60-75 minutes.

cripes..

mine is about 8 km each way. but i try to lengthen it to 30 km on the way home. so usually 38 km or so both ways and if i get up early enough - 60 km.

i've convinved myself that riding an MTB on shared paths is harder work though - lots more braking and accelerating, rough surfaces, etc.

My commute is 20 km in and 22 km home. It's longer going home as I avoid some slow/dodgy right turns and go on one stretch that is good for some interval training.

Yeah I usually lengthen mine either morning runs, or riding home. I currently ride around 550km a week. People look at me like i have two heads, but riding to and from work has so many positives, it clears all the daily stress, and starts you off for a great day. Plus I sleep like a baby :-) good work though on your rides. MTB would be tough !!

Short commute (from gf's place)= 25k each way

Long Commute (from my place)=45k each way.
Try to do at least 2 days a week of either, best i've done was 5 of the long commute.

12KM in and 20KM home. I take the route along the beach on the way home. Unfortunately the prevailing SW wind is generally in my face every evening, on the beach that ain't fun.

I commute 5k's each way, that's why I have to go for training rides of up to 110 km after work..... and still get home at a time when the wife isn't too crabby!

22km each way, mix of relatively flat cycleways and a few big hills. I do it around twice a week now, depending on weather, in about an hour and 6 to 8 minutes each way.
