you can still get a 7 speed 12-28 or 13-28
Yeah I know you can get them if you hunt around, it was just my local LBS didn't have anything else in stock when I walked in on a whim one day. I tend to procrastinate and research and then just go charging in one day and forget everything I've learned. Wasn't even thinking about the skinny end of the cassette.
But I don't think anyone I ride with has a 53:11, so I've got that over them anyway, even if their bikes weigh half what mine weighs.

I'm absolutely loving my 11-23 Chorus cassette with the standard, because it lets me ride 39/14 without cross chain issues. I do use the 11 on the M2 because you're pushing 60kmh for big chunks of the westbound trip, but's mainly about usability for the small ring. I can ride the 39, I just never could get into the 34 and even the 36 isn't quite there.
Eastern Creek is a great course to have a 53/11, if you're in the pack and want to get the heartrate down a bit at 55kmh.
But yeah, it's a bit of a stupid gear. We aren't descending for the yellow jersey!

I need to be doing more than 75kph before 53-11 gives me an advantage over 53-12 but that wasn't the case in the past. Nowadays I spin much better

I use it cos I have it...
Particularly when coasting down hills.
It gives me the sense of having more control when turning the pedals at speeds over about 65-70kph
But if I'm honest, I'd happily trade it for an extra cog in the middle to upper part my 11-28 (11-Spd) cassettes.
Current ratios are:
11,12,13,14,15,16,17,19,22,25,28
I'd love to try:
12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21,23,25,28
Or similar...
I reckon this might give me a better chance of balancing my recovery vs speed when riding up hills.
Plus I still have a bail out gear at 39:28, which so far has got me up every hill or mountain I've tried thus far.

I've never needed an 11 on a road going crankset with a 53t chainring. On a mtb I can see the point of one if your using a a 44t chainring.
If I'm going downhill over 60kmh it's actually faster and uses less energy for me to get in an aero tuck. If your in a bunch doing 60 you'll get sucked along without the need for a 11t. If your on the front at that pace you won't be out there that long and you only need to spin and extra 8 rpm a minute with the 53x12 to do it.
I believe that most 11 speed cassettes waste the extra sprocket with the 11t and it would be be better used at the other end. It's just an ego thing like many things cycling.

I was sprinting down the hill at Eastern Creek the other day in 53/11, and wanted a gear I could jump on. I was going about 65, and at that speed, you're already at 110. Yes, I can and do spin faster, but at that point, I really wanted to stomp a bigger gear. It was just a particular situation; it's the first time I've noticed the issue. In general riding, and most races, the 11 gets little use.

I use my 11t often. I could survive without it, but it is more useful than at the other end for me with my 11 speed 11-28 (52/36 front). I need to have a 28, but use it less often than 11.
Times I most use the 11T:
* As mentioned the sprint on main circuit at EC (I have hit around 70 before and someone went passed me on the line!!).
* Solo TT efforts on motorways where you are doing 50-60 on slight descents with wind assistance from traffic.
* Fast steep descents where you are pushing rather than just rolling down (sure you can roll only 5kph slower... but that is 5kph slower!!)
* When in slow mode I sometimes like to push low cadence at 30kph with a tail wind.
I would estimate I use it for at least 10% of my riding (thinking more like 15%).

I guess the moral to the story is if you race at Eastern Creek you need an 11, or if you hate spinning when getting a tow.

Why would you need it?

Calculate your best usage yourself :

After the ATB recently I might have a go with the date from that.

Tractor passed me the other day... Had a nice big corn trailer on, normally they sit between 40-45kmph, I normally jump in but let this one go.
When it was about 300m up the road I put it in the 11 and went for it... Never got close
