…….
I've been following the trail users Facebook group and geez there's a lot of anti-cyclist sentiment being spouted on there. It's amazing how many people get upset if someone want to use the trail in a slightly different way to the way they want to use it.
……
Similar things sometimes happen on the Murwillumbah Facebook page, in relation to etiquette on the Tweed Valley Railtrail.
It is popular with all the groups that you mention, gravel bikers, e-bikers, “hired” e-bikers (a very different breed of rider), distance runners, dog walkers, prams and strollers, and last but not least, people just out for a casual stroll.
Hardly any horses on the Tweed Valley Railtrail, because horses are only sposed to be on a it apart from a few km near Burringbar. (as far as I know)
There are various other old (closed) forestry roads and beaches in Tweed Shire where horses can go to etc.
Did I mention dogs ? There are usually plenty of dogs on the Railtrail, including some that are without human company - sometimes.
The usual issue of course is those cyclists that buzz past pedestrians at undignified speed.
I’m sure that this happens, but I don’t think that it is such a “crisis” (yet) as some people making out.
As for using a bell, well I reckon that bells are barely useful - most of the time. Mainly because a huge proportion of pedestrians are using headphones etc.
Being a Tweed local I have the luxury of being able to avoid the busy parts of the Railtrail, and I just factor the pedestrian traffic volume into my riding behaviour, knowing that when there are lots of pedestrians about you just have to slow down.
And as I am about to pass them I usually say something like “good morning” or “passing on the right “ or “is your dog a boy or a girl” etc
I don’t think that the dreaded Magpies are out in force down here (yet). But there have been reports in recent days of snakes out on the Railtrail. Including venomous types !
I pity any snake that tries to cross the Railtrail. It’s not going to have an easy passage.
