Two strokes on the Koonung

Postby Mozziediver » Sun Jun 09, 2019 9:48 pm

On the Koonung trail, on the hill near the Entrance to Freeway Golf Club, I was over taken by 3 yoofs on MTB style bikes with two stroke motors fitted. Possibly Yamaha, as that logo was on the tank on one and its rider's helmet. It's probably not covered by the rules but I would think hard to object to, given the prevalence of electric powered bikes on the same trail.
Any one know
a) if these are legal
b) if these are the next big thing?

are they legal? probably not - the law isn't that simple but from I've seen advertised and sold (legally for use on private land) petrol engine conversions can typically do nearer 50-60km/hr and power output around 10x the legal allowed and pedal assist doesn't exist

https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety- ... d-bicycles

is it the next big thing? don't know been around quite a while and kits / 2nd hand bikes available on gumtree/ebay (often with the tag line "got my license back so no longer need")

next big thing is probably mtb style electric bicycles with power/speed above that for legal share trail / road use but less obviously so than a smelly/noisy/knocked together petrol engine conversion

think I've seen the 3 lads mentioned a couple of times and their riding didn't seem any worse than some of the road groups that slow for nothing - also there's a regular guy on Dandenong Creek trail who does needs reporting

SA has made them illegal: https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/driving-an ... ed-bicycle , due I suspect to the prevalence of overpowered ones (and there was at least one nasty accident that I am aware of).

I'm not sure of the status in states other than SA and Vic, but hopefully other states will follow suit.

Some of the electric bikes are easily just as bad - had some guy the other week going crazy speeds on his electric assisted mountain bike, and doing dumb things like cutting the corners at intersections (going wrong side of the road) - I assume just to overtake me, perhaps it was some badge of honour thing. Never mind at the next corner I quickly caught him and then went past again, without any motor assistance. This too with a loaded backpack, and knee which was still bandaged up.

But I can point to better than that, or these frankenstein two-strokes powered bicycles... The local cycleway around here (in Sydney, NSW) one evening, a set of peculiar looking lights is coming towards me at dusk. That looks like a motorbike, I mean, Japanese sport-bike... :o Sure enough, it damn well is! He was going quite slowly. I stopped a little after that and asked a guy out walking if he'd seen it. Apparently he claimed to the walker that he was just slowly taking a short cut (which he wasn't).
