Omafiets (connected a to Glow Worm) in Redfern made good business of important second-hand bikes in good knick from Holland and getting them on the roads in Sydney. It stems back to a Dutch tradition where people trade-in their old bikes when they get a new one and there is sometimes an oversupply of perfectly good second hand bikes. But they do a lot of business in new bikes these days.
Getting to the point, I understand the owner has sold-up and there are changes, it appears that they are moving to a new location in 2020. They are promoting a 10% discount but often it is easier to sell gear for an attractive price rather than relocating so keep an eye open for good deals if you are in the market for a bike or commuting parts and accessories.

Yes I got notification of this event through my FB feed and will be sorry to see them go from George St Redfern, it was a top spot and is where I bought the Vivente Patagonia (which sadly is no longer part of the model line up)
So has Chris and Ollie sold the business or just the owner of the building had sold and they have to vacate?
Glo-worm is also another great shop and they sell top E-Bike gear, especially the cargo style bikes. It was kind of like a sister shop to Omafiets.
I'll be going to see if I can get a few accessories but nothing major at this point.
Going to be a huge move though..their store is chockas.

You may know it better than me... I don't know the exactly constellation suffice to say when I visited the stores and met the staff - there was a strong connection with Maurice.

Actually I think Glow worm Cycles might be the original....possibly as they have also got a 10th Birthday celebration and sale coming up and I do think either Ollie or Chris might still have a stake in Glow worm. From what I understand Glow worm was possibly the original Vivente dealer as they used to carry them but Omafiets took them over as they wanted to be more for touring, bikepacking and commuting. I think the breakaway could have been when they started importing the used Dutch bicycles for use in Sydney and Glow worm now is solely E-Bikes and Brombtons. Omafiets sell Brombtons as well.
Just my observation but mostly guessing but were told of their connection.

I hope Omafiets do manage to make a go of it elsehwere... cos where the hell can I take my odd bikes for repair?
Glow Worm don't take outside bikes anymore. Omafiets haven't blinked at trike or bike, and do Bromptons so I can take the B there as well. They also understand the whole slow/cargo/utility thing.
Problem I guess is you can't make the rent on workshop and when Woolies sells bikes for $100 everyone thinks that is what bikes cost.

Yeah zebee but those $100 bikes are the ones that end up on roadside rubbish tips or stashed somewhere in the garage as a "was a good idea at the time" scenario.zebee wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 12:26 pmI hope Omafiets do manage to make a go of it elsehwere... cos where the hell can I take my odd bikes for repair?

I'm sure that Omafiets will have a much better store somewhere hopefully convenient, they have a huge following for a bikeshop and great customer service overall so I can't see why they'd just pack up and finish up...hope not!!
cheers
