NSW Laws and fines lop sided

Postby brumby33 » Fri Jan 17, 2020 9:03 pm

Here it shows over 250 pedestrians being fined a measly $76 for jay walking in front of trams, whilst not playing attention and yet when they decide to have an operation Pedro, it's $319 just for not wearing a helmet....how can this be justified...
plus all the other fines they slap on a cyclist weighs a lot more than what's laid on a zombie pedestrian.

Just doesn't seem right!!

The pedestrians are a powerful voting force, so they have some clout.

Riders are there to be fined, tackled to the ground (another Pedro stunt from some years ago) or killed (by cars). :(

Cyclists used to get similarly small fines until the anti cyclist lobby and politicians decided to raise them in VIC and NSW.

Actually they generally aren't. Pedestrians are pretty roughly looked after on our roads too. Don't blame them.

They get better than what we do, nice footpaths everywhere, etc. They don't get their infrastructure ripped up to make way for car parking either.

I got a meeting with the nearest liberal MP before the fines got increased, and they got a staff member from Duncan Gay's office in. They justified the increase as a cyclist may cause a truck to swerve and that is the level of damage the fine is reflecting. So the chaos theory is being applied here.

Well a truck wouldn't have to swerve if the driver was aware of his surroundings, drove to the conditions and have his load secured. I've driven trucks from 3 tonne to 42 tonne semi trailers with maximum load and have never needed to swerve violently as I allow heaps of space in front, I've also driven buses mostly for 32 years around metro Sydney & Newcastle and always leave plenty of error space.
No Duncan Gay wanted to appease his high level business mates as well as the shock jocks on local radio. The doubling and even tripling of fines isn't justified on a non-motorised vehicle.
Maybe it's more like "well we don't get anything out of them for rego so we'll make them pay through fines" that should keep motorists groups off my back.

Anyone can be a pedestrian, so the risk of backlash is higher.

Cyclist in NSW were viewed as bothersome, especially by the v8, petrol sucking car fan, Duncan Gay. They were secretive with their meetings (I ask to join but was ignored), they got AGF and Cycling Australia endorsement (a massive fail for two organisations that don’t represent a base of members focussed on advocacy) in exchange for the minimum safe passing distance which they fail to enforce.

Cyclists are bothersome for politicians because safer cycling and the role in a modern transport infrastructure is long-term. Politicians can only fund short-term and wider roads for cars deliver support... safe cycling doesn’t.
