The Illawarra Mercury is doing their best to stir sh*t up with almost daily FB posts about road closures and the like, none of which anyone can read as it's paywalled, but the locals don't let that stop them!

Yeah the dumb bogans down here have no idea what this "bike race" is.familyguy wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 2:56 pmI'll probably go and stay at a mates place for the weekend events, the elite road route almost goes past the door. Then ride into the city to catch the end.

They think its like the Sydney to Gong or LeTape.
Embarrassing.

A world championship event that will bring in money and tourism to the area.
Is that good?
Nup, we can't have these bloody cyclists taking over our roads for a few hours.

Council is taking out speed humps and roundabouts and resurfacing some roads. A few internationals have arrived early and have been spotted.
Ive been asked to be Sports Director for the Tahitian team ....I have to work during the week but I'll do my best. Means I get an accreditation pass and can go wherever I want in the restricted team areas ... Im looking forward to getting close to the big names. Maybe a selfie with Wout Exciting.

The local rag, the Mercury has been posting negative click bait stories, with bogans joking about throwing tacks on the road.AndrewCowley wrote: ↑Wed Aug 31, 2022 12:26 pmWill be interesting to see how the locals react if there's any road closures or disruptions.
I cant wait for the real world media to get here and make the local rag look like the bum wipe that it is.

I prefer to use them as shoe inserts after wet riding. The Manly Daily was wonderful for wicking up all the moisture. Unfortunately, since they went exclusively on-line my supply has dried up.

It's almost like they've been told to. To be fair, it looks like the same 25-30 outraged locals commenting, with the same 5-10 who bite back. A friend has a business that is impacted all week as they're inside the course for the TT and juniors races, but they're accepting it and moving on. You can always park outside that zone and walk in, it's really easy to do if you could be bothered.DernyDriver wrote: ↑Wed Aug 31, 2022 3:43 pmThe local rag, the Mercury has been posting negative click bait stories, with bogans joking about throwing tacks on the road.AndrewCowley wrote: ↑Wed Aug 31, 2022 12:26 pmWill be interesting to see how the locals react if there's any road closures or disruptions.

I drove from Corrimal to the Helensburgh turn off yesterday and the clearway signs are up, so people have enough advance warning. Can't help but think there will be something go wrong on the LHD run. It's narrow, twisty and not a great surface in some places. I know they're fixing many parts of it starting now. I can't get down for both the Saturday and Sunday now, unless I go home that night, which might doable, need to check times.

Any chance of getting out of Wollongong after the TT event or just completely locked down? That will determine if I go down there or not. If you have to park outside then that stops me.
A friend is competing in the TT so I do want to get down there but my limited mobility makes walking longer distances difficult.
