Weekend Retro rides_Sydney(updates)

Postby frailer5 » Tue Feb 19, 2013 9:22 pm

See my post here

Am kicking this thread off as an organising point. Copied below is the text of the thread above. Possible first ride Sunday March 3. probable route: Bi-Centennial path, start near Merrylands High Sch. Follow past Prospect Res, the towards Fairfield City Farm. Open-ended as to where after that, but some sort of loop return to parked vehicles, most likely, after refreshments. Other routes likely later for variety, and depending on home bases of riders on any particular weekend.
Have notated the thread title '(updates)', in anticipation of its future use.

*************************************************

........an open-ended group ride in Sydney, most likely early Sundays, (but could be Saturdays on occasion as well, if a few want to).
-for older bikes/(probably) older riders. We won't be ageist though if there are 20-somethings who are into classic steel. Pace>sedate/social.
-plan to keep the thread there active as a weekly update on what rides/dates over the coming few weekends at any time. It will be an ongoing organising point.

-oh, critical mass is 2. :D

:D If the 3rd is ok, (this week is out for me also) we all have some prep time and time to spread the word and make suggestions.
If I may say Frailer is trip leader/organiser on this leg and others are welcome to input a ride that may be more central/convienient to their area to keep it accomodating for others to join in. I have N+1 and would love to join in with other Retro Tragics just about anywhere and any time :)
My version of RETRO is ............ steel frame with woteva version you have/adapted/adopted and pre 90's. I have a couple of 90's but not in the real retro theme for mine., each to their own 8)
"I have a dream" of a Sydney/NSW L'eroica 8)
look forward to this and more outings :D

I'm happy for a spin, however, Saturdays are more suited to me unless it's early sunday due to religious committments.

Either way, Steel is my go!

Shouldn't be a problem with a Saturday here and there. Things will roll out on this slowly, (of course  ).

Should include regular swap meets on every first of the month or something...

Some logistics in that. There will be swap tables, I believe at the Tempe Bash
We could toss the idea around for further down the track. But if the DHBC event goes well on the 23rd March, maybe there'll be repeats, and the swap aspect there may be enough for Sydney-siders.
Just early thoughts, is all.

Id be interested in some rides. Im not too far from Merrylands. How far is the route though? Ive never really been on a trip further than 20km.

Does a late 80s/early 90s Peugeot count? The bike's older than me

Greetings guys,

This is my first post but I've taken advantage of the great information and inspiration on this forum to fix up a couple of late 80s steel road bikes since moving to Sydney a few years ago. I'd happily bring one out on the 3rd. The proposed rout (Merrylands High School - Prospect Reservoir) sounds great. We had the family out there and the kids pronounced it a bicycle autobahn. As the date gets closer will a firmish start time or a specific start point be identified? I'm sure I'd find a group of steel bikes in the school parking lot but I thought I'd ask. Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Joe H

Sorry, a bit tardy clocking back in here. Saro28 gave me a gentle nudge... so here's what passes for an update.

Sunday March 3. It's an early kick-off, 0630 hours. Later rides can happen later, if people want, but there are distinct advantages; amongst others, still fitting other stuff in the day later on/keeping spouses~family happy.. reduced traffic on the path. It's not super-wide, and you have to watch for oncoming cyclists, as well as strolling pedestrians.
It's not mandatory, but preferably PM me with your given(1st) name, and mobile, in case super-grotty weather warrants a wet-weather postponement; (yeah, I've heard all the arguments about riding rain/hail/shine, and only buy them in small quantities). Postponement will only happen if it's threatening a day like last Saturday.

Address is Merrylands High School, southern end of Sherwood Rd, West Merrylands. There is access to the path there. Proposed we do a loop back via Canley Vale/Fairfield/Guildford, then follow the water supply pipes back to starting point.

Weather forecast here, in case it's looking dodgy for Sunday morning. By that point you'll have had my mobile PM'd back, if in doubt and want to call.

Pace will, I imagine, be fairly sedate. There are a few sharp pinches after Prospect Reservoir, and before Fairfield City farm, but after that, worst is low grades back to start. Looking at this stage as though we have 3~4 for starters.

See you there...

I might be able to come along, probably bring the DMI (you'll just have to close your ears to the squeaking BB). Gives me a good excuse to avoid the punishment of going to Waterfall with the C28s.

PM Sent.

Check on the link in post above on Saturday evening. I've got mobile numbers; shall confer with Andy (saro28) before considering pulling the plug. I think this stuff will blow through; east Coast Lows usually head SE. Early days yet.

I wonder if that is why Americans talk about 'taking a rain check' :|

... geez, I'd better start a list and get organised.

I stand corrected after looking at the pressure chart. It's cyclone spin-off. Hoo well. either way... that high in the Bight will be our salvation. I'm an optimist.

no storms predicted, :D no rain predicted :D but "possible" showers :o so unless you have a pristine one off that shouldn't see "weather"..........get to the start and ride it like it was meant to ridden :D Bring some appropiate clothing for the "possible showers" and some coin for the coffee/breakfast stop.

 Whats gonna happwn if its wet?

Hot shower when you get home... We'll only cancel if it's torrential, or threatening to get heavier. Not looking like it right now, per forecast.

Well, my list says 5 at this stage. Andy, myself, Quang, Joe, John. If I've missed anyone, please PM me.

Hi guys,

I just thought I'd confirm my participation in anything short of biblical floods. I tried to post before/after pictures of my beater Malvern Star on the Retro Biking's "Before and After Pics by all restorers” thread. Munga came to the rescue and managed to get the pictures to show. The Malvern Star is my rain bike so I'll bring that if necessary. I also tried to post before/after shots of my early 90s Bianchi but I think I'm new enough to this site that my posts need to be screened before they show. The Bianchi is my main road ride and will show if the weather is OK. I've got a nice "mid-life crisis" bike my wife let me splurge on that will come out if the weather promises not to rain. I'll do a before/after post on that later. See you there!

Joe

Oops, just realized this was a pre-90s ride so it'll be the Malvern or the Sunday sunny ride bike - an 86ish Merckx Corsa Extra in Panasonic blue and white with lots of shiny silver bits. The latter would be my preference! Either way, see you there.

Spoiled with choice there Joe. I'm down to 1 right now. Am trying to rectify that. And I doubt anyone's going to 'age' your ride-of-the-day. So long as it's got brakes so we stay safe. :D

The rain seems to be letting up and I'm still holding the coveted kitchen pass so I'll see you there. My apologies for using this thread as a test bed but I think I've cracked the code on posting flickr images to a post so I thought I'd try to put in two links to bike photos here that actually show something. Assuming this works and if you see a grey-haired lost looking fellow rolling around the school at about 0630 on either of these, please feel free to give me a shout.
