Avtar Size

Postby kenwstr » Sat Apr 12, 2014 11:24 am

I tried to add an avatar so chose a photo, cropped and resized to 80 x 80 pixels.
However it is still a shade over 30 KB as a .jpg and the limit is 9KB.
I tried cropping as tight as possible and resizing to 80 x 34 and it's still 28KB.
I calculated that I'd have to go to 40x40 or less which seems pretty worthless.
What can I do without loosing too much resolution, other people seem to manage?

Regards,
Ken

Most image processing software will let you choose the compression rate / quality of a JPEG. ImageMagick is nice in that it has an option to actually specify output size ("extent" from memory)

Send it to me and I can do this. I purposely keep the size down to avoid 10 MB avatars.... and it did happen.
