Fat bikes for kids?
Postby bychosis » Mon Dec 01, 2014 3:35 pm
Was away on the weekend and saw a bike hire sho. Outside were several different types including a 20" fat bike with discs and rear derailleur, presume 7spd. Kids bikes are already heavy compared to the rider weight, how heavy would a fat bike be? I haven't tried a fat bike yet, but would anyone here try one for their kids? Looked like they may have also had a 24" version there too.

Kids don't weigh much, you should be able to just drop the tyre pressures on a regular mtb/bmx and get much the same effect as an adult on a fat bike.
My kids happily ride to school with 10psi without complaining, though they do notice eventually when they get a puncture.

On-One do a 24" fattie. Most 20" BMX bikes seem to have plenty of tyre room in them for a fat(ish) tyre. As long as you have a wide enough rim and the frame clearance then 20x3 or even 20x4.5 tyres are not unheard of...
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle
