Cycling underwear
Postby wongaga » Wed Jan 29, 2020 5:35 pm
Like all that ancient Aussie-made Netti stuff, they were phenomenally well made and long-lasting (I can still wear the spray jacket I bought in about 1995!) But all good things must end, and they are finally about to succumb to the combined depredations of my bum and saddle, so I need replacements.
Does anyone have a recommendation for good bike undies currently on the market?
Cheers, Graeme

Why do riders have to adjust their manhood (In their safety standards approved trade name underpants) as they walk into the coffee shop on Sunday morning in their knobbly shoes on the hardwood floors?

Let me rephrase the question: if you have actually used any of the cycling undies currently on the market, tell me if you'd recommend them.

umm...did you look up mtb liner padded shorts? its pretty much what queeqeq linked to, ie padded shorts to wear under normal shorts. And judging by your response to queeqeq, it seems to be what your chasing.
To answer your question i use my TLD ones under my MTB shorts, but dont see why couldnt wear it under normal shorts. Id recommend the TLD ones i use

Would I buy them or any other liner again? No.
My reasoning is that I only ever used them when riding short distances on my shopping commute, 5 km to the shops 25 km on the loop back home with a stop by the lake at about the 15 km mark. I eventually decided that wearing knicks liner or not was not worth the effort for rides under 1 hour in the saddle.
For short distance short duration rides I find good quality moisture wicking boxers to be as comfortable and more practical. In my case I prefer merino because I tend to do a lot of my riding on multi week bicycle tours these days and merino is less prone to becoming smelly. I use these https://www.macpac.com.au/mens/base-lay ... 14752.html under gusseted pants for non stop rides up to about 2 hours duration. For medium to long distance rides I always wear bibs because for me they are the most comfortable option.

I've still got a few pairs of liners. Some of them actually clip in to the shorts via studs on the waist, but they can also be worn on their own under any pair of shorts or pants. I used to commute to work on a flatbar hybrid bike, wearing baggy shorts and sleeveless tops. I wore the liners under the shorts for my 25km each way commute, because it was pretty hot and moist wearing normal clothing, and it only took one commute and getting red raw legs from chafing that tipped me over.
In 2011 I moved house, further away from work, and I quickly realised that the hybrid bike just wasn't cutting it anymore, so I bought a dropbar road bike for commuting. Around the same time I was introduced to Bib Shorts when I was given a promotional kit through work (good quality custom kit). I pretty much ditched the baggy shorts and sleeveless tops after that and have never looked back. The baggy stuff is now just for going for a spin around the park with the kids where getting into the lycra just seems like overkill for riding around the perimeter of the local oval.

Just to clarify. Are you advising to go commando when wearing normal shorts or say jeans with a seam up the crutch or are you talking about not wearing underwear under a chamois as is the normal advice. That is going commando when wearing bibs or knicks.rodneycc wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2020 1:37 pmMan up and just go commando I went for years getting jock itch and rashes from boxers and underliners (yes even well washed/napisaned) when a smart person on BNA once informed me that you really shouldn't wear anything under your shorts!

No not jeans. I was referring to tight bike shorts (with or without chamois the cavet being as long as they are tight! Not mtb shorts either really).thamete wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2020 2:52 pmJust to clarify.
