3/32" cogs, rings and a 5-8spd chain can cope with a multitude of sins...

Smaller chainring so you can run a narrower BB (square taper) then use a smaller cog to get the same g.inches.
I'm sure at some point I had a spacer between the hub and the cog to push the cog out a few mm. Can't remember what sort of spacer it was though.

I wanted to use 151 BCD cranks on my McBain, but they fouled the chainstay, so I pushed them out a few mm with a longer BB spindle. To keep the chain line straight I swapped a spacer on the rear hub axle from the DS to the NDS and re-dished the wheel.
