It woukld be good to see this law in Australia...
DENVER — In a move advocated by cyclists but questioned by drivers, the state of Colorado is now making it legal for cyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs and red lights as stop signs.

The cycling practice, which is already used by many, is commonly referred to as a 'rolling stop,' 'Idaho stop,' or 'safety stop.'

The legislation will allow cyclists to legally move quickly through what is typically the most dangerous spot for them, the intersection. Colorado Department of Transportation data shows that 72% of crashes between cyclists and cars were related to intersections.

The bill is designed to reduce the amount of time Coloradan cyclists are required to spend at these dangerous crossings.

Yes, this is a good call. In particular where you need to queue behind a line of cars, it's definitely a vulnerable place to be.

I think it's a sensible idea bicycles, I can't really see it getting adopted here.

If the cyclist moves when it's not clear to do so, the fault for any collison is on them. Idaho Stop does not give cyclists carte blanche freedom to charge on in oblivion. What it does allow is progress through a red light provided standard give way rules are obeyed
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

My apologies, wasn't clear.

Doesn't help if the car at the stop sign doesn't stop.

As we all well know, many drivers don't understand the give way bit, especially to cyclists....

I think it's a sensible idea; and as a result can't see it being adopted here. Imagine the freakout from the drivers 'OMGosh, that cyclist just ran a red light despite there being no other traffic in sight and no provision for bicycles to trigger that intersection!'

Having said that I did a virtual ride in Fulgaz yesterday filmed in Massachusetts where the rider filming it spent the whole time running red lights and stop signs at high speed. I can see how this would go wrong; I had anxiety by the end of it.

If “sensible” prevailed the mentions of bicycles and pedestrians in the model road rules would be reduced by 90%

But No.

We need to “know our place”, as underlined each year by the punitive Operation Pedro.
