The Rutherglen Rotary Vintage bike ride day in April was a beauty.

It was organised by Greg Griffiths, the UCI commissaire and former rider and bike shop owner.

The start at the Rutherglen Convent featured a display of Pinarellos..



A low pro TT signed twice by Miguel..



And a modern retro Pinny prize for the raffle..



The ride itself was a bit of a choose your own adventure. It was 10km along the rail trail to the lunch spot at Wahgunyah and there was plenty of time to get there. I found out later that many had met up at 8am for a 40km road ride beforehand.

We decided to head south and made a 30km gravel loop finishing on a path along the Murray..



The turn out was really good and the weather was perfect..



There was 30 - 40 bikes (and some jerseys) on display at lunch including a few of Dean Woods..





Greg had invited a lot of former racers so there was lots of them around and there was drinks and dinner back at the Convent where a brewery is being set up.

And I got to ride Warren's 120 year old beast for a bit on the ride back.

Recommended to put on your list for next year.

Margaret was restricted and then finally banned by Auscycling's predecessor, NSW Amateur Cyclists' Union (NSWACU) in 1966 and 1967 respectively.
Between June 1966 and February 1968, Margaret McLachlan achieved the following records, which is still unrecognised by Auscycling in 2024:
16 June 1966 – Sydney to Melbourne. Elapsed time, 58 hours and 33 minutes.
23 April 1967 – Canberra to Sydney. Elapsed time, 12 hours, 5 minutes and 19 seconds.
21 July 1968 – Sydney to Newcastle. Elapsed time, 6 hours, 14 minutes and 30 seconds.
3 February 1968 – First Australian Women’s 1-hour unpaced record. Elapsed distance, 20 miles and 717 yards.

Wow that sounds terrible the way she was/is excluded.
I would go if I was up that way.

I thought ldrcycles would also be interested given his work in setting up the Road Record Association of Australia, but traveling down to Sydney is probably too far for him

I was driving up the road from Myrtleford to Stanley yesterday and wondering how your event went? Got any photos Mark?

Who's in Perth (or environs)? Perth Retro Riverloop is on the first Sunday of every month. Meet at East St Jetty, Fremantle at 7am. We all ride something old, some go fast some go not so fast, it's a no drop ride though - always a lantern rouge, and plenty of regroup points. And coffee at the finale

Next one is June 2nd! - see you there

Hmm, very tempted to get a stall at this event as I have a heap of stuff to get rid of and selling bits thru Gumtree/EBay is SO tedious...
My main problem with this one is making enough to cover the petrol costs from driving there and back

Not quite a totally 'retro' event but the Dungog Pedalfest on Saturday 21st Sept (https://pedalfest.org.au/) is having (I quote)

The Penny Farthing Inaugural NSW Criterium Championship.
We have had Penny Farthings in rides before but now we are setting up a half hour race around the block
with the last two laps flat out. We will be cautioning potential riders about the potholes, after all some of them have heritage potential and we would hate to see them harmed. riders that you may know.
We ask you to pass the word to any potential riders that you may know.

The Inaugural Antique Single Gear Australian Criterium
We are planning yet another Criterium around the block of any bike older than 30 years with a single gear.
Similar to the Penny farthing a half hour event with the last two laps flat out. Again we have concerns for our potholes but with care we hope their heritage potential will not be lost.

Now, I no longer have anything to do with this event, it is organized by Dungog Rotary these days so how many high wheelers and single speeds are going to actually turn up I have no idea. And yes, they are big noting themselves with the title of the high wheeler race

If you are interested, be warned that Dungog's main street is flat but the 'around the block' loop has a couple of short but sharp hills in it and they are not joking about the potholes.

I was thinking that retro is anything you were attracted to as a teenager, but that could fit P!IN20's definition as well

Gee whizz, these last two comments mean every time I walk into my garage and see my bikes they will have a whole new look.

On a side issue recently I had agreed to buy a lovely Somec from a fellow member here (he may or may not organsise the Abbotsford swap meet). In the process (after I had agreed to purchase) I requested "some photos to get me excited" I omitted to to add the words "of the bike".

Let's just say this persons contact icon on my phone is a lady from the 80's wearing less than what cyclists wear on a hot day.

The wonderful Farren Collection is worth the time and effort of travel in seeing. Charlie has spent decades (with late hubby Paul) building up that phenomenally famous and unfailingly fascinating collection. Nothing and none of it would be out of place cruising and crashing on the streets of Maldon, as she has demonstrated often before!!

Had a young couple (in their twenties) looking thru the shed recently. Apparently everything I own is 'retro' as it is all at most 8-10 speed. Oh, except the 11 speed gravel bike which is just 'old'

Seriously, I think 'retro' is just a look or style as opposed to ''veteran' or 'vintage' which have some sort of (rolling?) age definition IIRC.

Most of my shed would meet Eroica specs, except for the pedals and brifters. But the upright bike with the 3sp S/A definitely has the look.

One of the poorer Abbotsford meets...no Petey Mac for instance.
